atsushijp, 2021年2月21日

Communication (sharing the culture) is quite difficult. Those whom I would like to tell “Thank you for supporting Sashiko”, they often apologize (share their worries) to me for their possible Cultural Appropriation. They have been reading the posts here. I want them to know they are not the reason I speak up (If everyone is like them, I would be just sharing the beautiful photos as I used to).

☆

Those whom I would like to tell “Enough is enough. Stop twisting the culture”, they consider my words come from “a choice”, not “a pain” (They think I am choosing to feel the pain by not taking it easy). There are many reasons that I write some unpleasant posts. I wish I wouldn’t need to, but enough is enough.

☆

I feel the more I share about Japanese Sashiko, the more vivid the people who are interested in Sashiko in English polarized into 2 groups – (1 ) the people who try to learn the Japaneseness behind the word respectfully, and (2) the people who think it is a “choice” to use a foreign word for their “whatever” convenience & fun. Although this “polarisation” is not the ideal phenomenon, it is better than seeing Sashiko to be repainted completely differently. There is no option for me to give up my own identity. I am realizing the clear boundary of “Cultural Appropriation” and “Cultural Appreciation”. The Youtube “Sashiko Talk” will be a great platform to discuss these issues. Please DM me if you would like to discuss C/A with me on Youtube as well. I am done with being oppressed in the pain.

Keiko is now challanging to dye Sashiko Thread with Walnut Leaf. The photo is the Indigo Dye “bAfter” the Walnut Dye… So many processes to create the beuatiful color. and we are proud of what we do. — 2018-06-27 16:27:49 Source

I have a question. Have you ever felt that my message is sexist? I received a comment accusing me of being misogynistic. I specifically pay attention when I talk about gender – because Sashiko is largely affected by it. The comment is on a Youtube video I uploaded yesterday. As…

Frankly speaking, there isn’t much difference from Sashiko & other types of stitchery. As some say, it is just hand-stitching (running stitching) after all. Your culture should have a similar practice, and one of your ancestors probably practiced stitching similar to Sashiko. However, it is disrespectful to say “Just (Mere)…

Sometimes your posts make me worry that I am doing the wrong thing, but I keep reading because I want to keep learning. I think its important to read many perspectives, even if it makes me sad sometimes.

There are other people out there who say that if you are not Japanese that you are not allowed to participate in anything related to Japanese culture, but I appreciate that you are a little more open minded about that. Thank you for sharing.
