Sharing the Sashiko in English is very challenging because it is deeply rooted in Japanese culture. When I say, “Description of Sashiko in English isn’t sufficient”, many ask me for the “correct answer” or “the (simple) description”. Asking for answers, defining it with the clear & short statements, and following the “teacher” with (easy) how to is the ordinary in Western culture. In fact, the clear answers seems like a virtue here. The efficiency & productivity brought by “correct answers” developed the society. It is understandable that I receive many questions for “Right Definition”.

☆

However, please understand that my role in Sashiko is NOT to be a leader. I am NOT here to “teach” you what is correct and everything else is “wrong”. My role is different – it is Sharing and I would like you to doubt if any “leaders” in Sashiko understand the Japanese culture deeply. There are reasons I do not answer some questions – especially the one asking for the “correct one”. The question itself isn’t the issue. Trying to mold Sashiko (foreign culture) to something they are comfortable without learning the original mold is the issue (Cultural Appropriation).

☆

Explaining my role in Sashiko can take a series of articles. However, I wanted you to share. I made an article on Patreon for the public for a limited time. This is my present. I want you to know how “twisted (not wrong)” the Sashiko you know may be.

When I speak up, I try my best to be “reasonable”. “Reasonable” here indicates being “logical” so that we can be on the same page in sharing stories regardless of the fundamental difference we have. Therefore, I ask here to read as many posts as possible here. The logic is…

It is unfortunate that there aren’t many “(Art) Catalogue” for Sashiko pieces published (in English) with proper description. Well, as always, there are reasons why “No so many Catalogue”. Sashiko is still on-going craftsmanship (although it is about to distinguish). One famous (Sashiko) book with great photos & description would…

Wow. (I’ve only just discovered your account after being sent it by my grandmother!)

I think about this ‘right answer’ mentality a lot, as I work in education in the UK, it’s not something I have much success discussing with people here. Very interested to start looking for different cultural ideas on learning.
