It is unfortunate that there aren’t many “(Art) Catalogue” for Sashiko pieces published (in English) with proper description. Well, as always, there are reasons why “No so many Catalogue”. Sashiko is still on-going craftsmanship (although it is about to distinguish). One famous (Sashiko) book with great photos & description would be “Japanese Fishermen’s Coats from Awaji Island” by Ms.Sadako. Some think that the Jackets in the book are a “lost art” already (as a review says). I received a question if our profile photo is one of the fishermen’s coats from Awaji. The answer is No & Yes. No, it isn’t from Awaji, but Yes it is the similar artisanship that it has not lost yet.

It isn’t easy to recreate the Jacket like this. Learning patterns & how to stitch wouldn’t be sufficient to make it (Again, many reasons there). Sashiko isn’t only about design nor technique – it is more than how to (and this account is for explaining that). Please know that there are still (a few) artisans who can make these. Your mindful choice (of what you learn/purchase from whom) will significantly contribute to the current Sashiko culture (not trend in English, but the tradition in Japan). This is the Jacket Keiko made in 2020, and it is listed for sale in an exhibition now. Your choice will determine the future of Sashiko.

刺し子業界は、様々な方々の知られざる（匿名の）お仕事と貢献によって成り立っていると思っています。出版されている先生方を始めとして、地域毎にある刺し子を守り続ける無名の人々がいるからこその今の刺し子です。刺し子さん（刺し子をされる人々）だけでなく、道具や材料、また昔の大切な作品を扱って下さる古物商の方々、そして何より作品を購入して下さる沢山の方々のお力で成り立ってきました。

僕が恵まれているのは、育った環境が「作り手の集まり」だったことです。お付き合いのある古物商の方々はいましたが、私達が昔の刺し子作品を購入し転売することはありませんでした。買うのは古布。販売する作品は全て手が加わったものでした。ほとんどがゼロからの作品です。英語圏ではこれが少し”当たり前”じゃなくなっているのかもしれません。まだ作り手が存在する業界です。めちゃくちゃ縮小して、継続も難しいかもしれません。ただ、作品集に掲載されているような野良着を作ることは、現代でも可能ですし、今も作り続けています。刺し子はまだ過去にはなっていないんです。
