I am glad that the previous post was helpful to understand my insight about Cultural Appropriation in Sashiko. I sincerely prefer to encourage someone (you) who listen to the voice to call “it” Sashiko than letting ignorant people to twist What Sashiko is by them calling “it” Sashiko-inspired. “Inspired” is not a magic word to erase the pain of C/A. What they are inspired by is important. When one try to understand the original culture they is inspired by, they can call it Sashiko without protecting oneself by saying “inspired” (in my opinion as of today). All I ask is their respect to learn more.

How about Boro-inspired…? Well. It is a different story. “What is inspired by” becomes a bigger issue when the word is appropriated in the opposite meaning.

Some name Boro to “a placemat with colorful threads with showy visible patches for using it for meals”. Even if they say it is “Boro-Inspired/style”, it makes me sick. I explained how culturally wrong the “Boro under Food” is. If they have imagination & time to learn, using colorful threads & fabric cannot be “Boro-inspired/style”. For the sakes of discussion, it may be “Boro-to-be”, but it is confusing to grasp what they are inspired by. Saying “inspired” implies the person understands some culture & referring idea from the word. Therefore, I ask to keep learning. There are millions of stories why it is painful to see Food on Boro. Callihg “bright-colored Patchwork” Boro is just inappropriate.

カラフルな糸を使い、綺麗に切り揃えられた虹色の布を散りばめたパッチワークを「襤褸」と呼ぶ人がいて、「それは襤褸じゃない」と指摘を受けた後（指摘したのは僕じゃないです）に、じゃぁ「襤褸風パッチワーク」とするから良いでしょ？というやり取りを目にしたことがありました。その当時はまだ反論できるレベルになかったので無言で通り過ぎましたが、襤褸風ってなんやねん？と思うんです。パッチワークで良いやん？と。そこになぜ”襤褸”という言葉をつけるのか。しっかり勉強してほしいなと思うのです。

最近声が大きくなった理由は、「注目を集めるため＆お金を稼ぐため」に、なんでも襤褸ってつけてるよとアドバイスを頂いたから。無関係の人の利益の為に文化が蔑ろにされるのは嫌なんですよね。だから、煙たがられても発信し続けます。まだまだ勉強が必要な襤褸ですが、芸術性だけを求めるのは襤褸じゃないと思うから。

Question because I am interested in both boro and sashiko- Would it be accurate to use the word boro if using Japanese technique to repair a family quilt, or is it preferable for me to just use “mend,” “patchwork,” etc.? I tend towards the latter (using terms already established in my culture regardless of the techniques used, especially since I am not in any way Japanese). I so appreciate your posts exploring cultural appropriation from your unique perspective, beyond the gorgeous stitching!

今、襤褸が世界的にもブームになり、営利目的で使われてるなと思います。それは日本でも見られて、それパッチじゃないか？と疑うものも。
本来は、布は貴重でその貴重なことから小さな布さえもとっておき、家族を思い繕っていた行為だったと思います。だから私は繕う時、なるだけ過去の人と同化出来る様に汚さない様に直していくのですが、それを襤褸とは呼びたくないし、行為としては繕いだと思っています。きっと襤褸って言えばかっこいいでしょう？どう？って言われている様で違和感を感じれるけど、新しい襤褸(襤褸風)があっていいでしょ！と二極化してるのかなとも感じてどれが正解なのか分からなくてなっています。
襤褸って名前は、使って、使って、擦り切れたり使い倒した先の行為なのかなって感じます。

This is so good. I have fallen into this trap and have learnt to be ‘inspired’ by a technique is to spend some time with someone on an almost spiritual level to learn about the meaning behind the technique. I want to learn to weave flax in the tradition of the whenua of this land and while I can look at books, I want to learn from a kuia who puts the depth of meaning into the technique and thank them for sharing their ancestral wisdom.
