Today is “Kotoyouka (Feb.8th)”, and you may know what it means for stitchers in Japanese custom. It is the day of “Harikuyou” – a (requiem) ceremony for the broken/bent needles. Please refer the previous posts for the details about Hari Kuyou around Dec.8th (If you are on Patreon, Article is about Harikuyou. Thank you for your support).

☆

I don’t have any needles to farewell this time since I couldn’t stitch much from the previous Harikuyou (on Dec.8th). Which dates we offer the Harikuyou ceremony is based on the region. Some on Dec.8th, some on Feb.8th, some on both dates. Regardless, the Japanese have “a day” to appreciate the needles & the spirits within the needles.

☆

A needle is(was) something very special to the Japanese people. I believe it was the same in other cultures. For me, a needle is something to balance my feelings. When I am balanced well, the needle will absorb the extra tension. When I am balanced, the needle enhances(Amplify) my rhythm. Without the needle, there is no Sashiko. Therefore, I would like to share the importance of choosing the “good one” for you. The good needle will talk to you, balance you, and support you, as if there is a spirit in it. There are reasons we (the Japanese) believe(d) that there is a spirit in it.

I had such a great time in Brooklyn last weekend for the Sashiko Workshops. As always, I am a bit burned out after the big matters to me. This time, I took days off to focus on recovery first. @loopoftheloom displayed our item so nicely. I feel like our Sashiko…

In Southern India, during the annual festival of Navarathri, one day is dedicated to all tools… Kitchen knives, garden tools, gadgets, carpentry tools, sewing implements, farming tools, factory assembly lines… Pretty much every possible tool is worshipped. An attitude of gratitude prevails in the air…one day every year. Thank you for sharing your method of appreciation of the needles ….

I thank my needles. I save the broken and worn out ones and lay them to rest with thanks. They worked in tandem with me for a long time as we created beauty so they deserve a good retirement.

Thank you for sharing this tradition. It’s very different from the way I learned to treat worn out tools, but there is something about it that is beautiful and comforting.
