When I think of Sashiko as a “culture”, I face a big challenge of “Sustainability” – which requires “Continuity” and “Reproducibility”. “Sustainability in Sashiko” includes the continuous requests to the artisans, and “offering their masterful crafts” will establish the “continuous practice” of Sashiko.

Sharing Sashiko stories is important, but building a circulation to encourage artisans to stitch will make it “culture”. No culture exists without actual practice. It is my sincere dream to offer “a job” to our students who learned Sashiko from us. We start this project slowly but surely, and this Pillow Case is made by one of our rising artisans (@nozomic123), with using Japanese fabric from small textile artisans with our great Sashiko thread. Sashiko’s origin starts from “caring for family”. Now, in order to pass it down, I would like to offer items as a form of “caring for someone (we care)”. It is very challenging, but impossible. I am the one who had witnessed  this “dream” happened in the history of Sashiko. Her Sashiko is just a few years old, but we believe her Sashiko is ready to surprise the world.

初めての運針会から3年以上。基本的に、「参加希望を頂いた段階で検討する」という結構むちゃくちゃな開催方針なのですが、沢山の方に私達の刺し子の運針に触れて頂き、学んで頂いています。「運針会にご参加頂いた方全てに、その後ずーっと刺し子を継続してもらう」というのは、非現実的な願いです。中毒性がある刺し子（＆運針）をお伝えしているとは思いますが、同時に、飽きる可能性は否定できません（笑）。それでも、ずーっと刺し子を楽しんでくれている方々＆ふと刺し子に戻ってきてくれた方々と、一緒にも見たい風景があります。それは、「刺し子そのものを仕事にする」ということ。

刺し子とお金儲けの相性は、抜群に悪いです。そりゃそうです。手作業だもの。それでも、「（報酬がある）仕事」を諦めない事で、再現性と継続性が担保できないかと願っているのです。そんな一歩にご協力下さっている方の一人が、@nozomic123 さんです。コロナ禍で丸々1年遅れてしまったのですが、@upcyclestitches にて沢山の物語を書いていく予定です。Nozomicさんの針目。とても勇気が貰える刺し子です。一番最初の運針会の時の針目（の記憶）と比較すると、雰囲気が違うんです。技術が向上したのも勿論なのですが、「布と話してくれてるんだなぁ」と感じることができる、とても素敵な針目です。そんな刺し子を世界へ。自分に言い聞かせるんです。「大丈夫、俺の目は曇っちゃいない」って。刺し子そのものはまだまだ未熟ですが、刺し子を見る目だけは、自負しているのです。
