Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

I started teaching Sashiko in English in 2017 following teaching Sashiko in Japa

I started teaching Sashiko in English in 2017 following teaching Sashiko in Japanese online. Back then, I wasn’t sure what to teach because Sashiko was too ordinary for me to “teach”. However, thanks to many students, then friends, and then rising artisans, I am confident that I can offer some value to the society. My mentor (in a different field) once taught me how to find a good teacher. It is very simple – to check how their students do. Are they just following the teacher? Or are they doing more than what the teachers do? The best teacher will bring a student to the next level – which may be a place of “better than a teacher”. I am still “learning” to be a good teacher. Meanwhile, I want to share with some rising Sashiko artisans who learned Sashiko from us.

☆

The first rising-artisan I introduce is @na.na_45 who you may already know. In fact, some of my followers are the bigger fans of her than of mine. Hahaha. It is perfectly fine. I am a big fan of her Sashiko as well. In 3 years after she learned Unshin from us, her Sashiko practice brought her to a whole nother level. For me, Keiko’s Sashiko is more “Avant-garde”, whereas Nana’s Sashiko is more “Traditional”. Both are wonderful in a different way. I often get fascinated by her stitching – if my stitching is more like “powerful & speedy”, her stitching is “elegant”.

☆

It is not a comparison at all. There is no such a thing as Right and Wrong in Sashiko. However, I am super happy to enjoy the diversity in the same Sashiko I share. Just a few years, if one keeps practicing, they can reach this level. I am very proud of her & myself. The Sashiko we share is available from our Online Sashiko Workshop even under Covid-19. The detail can be found from a link on the profile.

まずはななさん(@na.na_45 )。説明も不要です(紹介になってない?)。本当に上品な運針をされていて、結果もとても上品。憧れる運針をされる一人です。3年でここまで。いつも勇気を頂いています。ありがとうございます!

Today’s post may sound more philosophical than usual. It is a message to myself – not for someone else. Although it isn’t for someone else, I hope it would be great if this can be someone’s encouragement. The photo is 95% completion of the on-going Sashiko. Well. I will share…

In 2014, Keiko & I stood up from the sad reality we experienced. In 2017, after the first invitation to teach in NYC & after being a stay at home father for 2+ years, we launched this “Sashiko Story”. As similar to other accounts, this account had single digit numbers…

How do we measure the success in “preserving the culture”? What does it take to

How do we measure the success in “preserving the culture”? What does it take to saying “we preserved the culture”? This has been a long-lasting question. I am not 100% sure what I need to do to preserve the culture… However, a fortunate opportunity to spend time with Makoto-san in…
