There aren’t “specific techniques” to make (To-Be-) Boro, but there are millions of ideas to make interesting To-Be-Boro pieces. The steps are very simple. (1) Fall in Love with a piece of Fabric → (2) Take Care of it (or Use it) → (3) Sashiko stitching (strengthening it or mend it) → (4) Take care of it and Use it. It is all repetitive after that with different ideas, different fabrics.
☆
For the ideas, I share the whole process of how I would make “Boro-To-Be” fabric on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/c/SashiCo/). What you need is good fabric you like and care (I plan to post some of the vintage fabric from Japan – but it doesn’t have to be vintage. You can make it vintage), and good Sashiko thread that can be part of the fabric over time (All of the Sashiko thread on our website is good for Boro-to-be as well. Other Sashiko threads, I don’t have enough experience to say it is good).
☆
It is all about your ideas. There is nothing you should do or you cannot do (There is no such a thing as Right and Wrong in Sashiko) – just keep trying to learn the Japanese culture behind Sashiko & Boro so that you can make a good Boro piece by yourself. Without trying to understand the Japanese culture, it may not look like the Boro you would like to try. I hope my videos (Mainly in Live Streamings) would be a good help.

Every 15th of each month, I adjust the numbers of participants I can have for the Sashiko Online Class. It is my goal to provide comprehensive support, and therefore I try to control the participants’ numbers. (Not like other “Online Learning” Platforms where thousands of people learn by just watching…
