I sincerely hope that my message is clear and not twisted. I want everyone to enjoy Sashiko. Yes, I demand respect (to Japanese Culture – not me). Yes, I make strong statements. Yes, some of my messages seem to be difficult to read/listen to. Some say that I disturb the peace in Sashiko, and I should be just positive (look at the bright side) in sharing Sashiko. I am aware that I am taking a risk to be disliked by stating something strong and uncomfortable. However, I want “everyone” to be peaceful in Sashiko. Everyone who is part of the Sashiko. Everyone who enjoys Sashiko. If a trend of Sashiko with “happy mending” is over someone’s pain, then it isn’t “everyone”. The voice may be small & quiet, but I hear them. So, I am suggesting to make “everything peaceful” – which is a mutual respect to Japanese culture/language. I think it isn’t too much to ask when they use the Japanese word “Sashiko”. If they prefer “happiness/positive” over someone’s pain in their foreign culture, that’s a very unfortunate issue – and probably we have to call it “Cultural Appropriation (C/A)”, right?

☆

C/A is a very difficult topic. I am still learning, and this is one milestone. “If there are people who feel pain by using the word/culture belonging to them, and when we ignore their pain by prioritising what we feel comfortable with, then it becomes an unfortunate Cultural Issue”. It is easy to avoid this unfortunate situation. Just “imagine” the pain – which can be done simply by “respect”. C/A is a difficult topic to discuss, but it isn’t so difficult to avoid.

Do you know Saori Weaving? We are offering the Sashiko Stitching workshop in a great weaving studio in NYC, Loop of the Loom (@loopoftheloom). I have just started learning the Saori Weaving, but I enjoy many similarities between Sashiko and Saori Weaving – rooted to the Japanese culture. Another trunk…

The more I learn, the more I feel the difference between JPN & ENG. Another word I struggle in translation is “想像力”. The direct translation is “Imagination”. However, what I would like to convey is more like “an ability to imagine to the point of ‘what if I were’”. Some…

“How to care & respect” is a difficult topic. One saying “I care about your culture” isn’t really enough. “Care & Respect” can be validated by action – not by just words. Words are, of course, important. However, if they support the people who appropriate the culture (directly/indirectly) because of…

Keep practicing and defending your culture. There’s too much indifference towards appropriation. Respect is not too much to ask.

Pourquoi ?
