A very cold day in PA today – to remind me the stinging clear air though the hand-stitches, yet for some reasons, the air wouldn’t freeze us. It is cold, but not freezing (I don’t know how to describe it).

Winter is the season for Sashiko, and the beginning of winter always brings many memories to me. Thanksgiving is coming here in the US, then Hanukkah and/or Christmas. It is the time of appreciation. 2020 has been the painful & challenging year to many of us. When we are in a challenging time, it is more difficult to care for someone else. However, it doesn’t mean that we forget/lose how to care (just more difficult than usual). I hope we can appreciate to what we have even in the time of difficulty, and care for the family who we live for.

I usually add one phrase in this season to family, “Thank you”, on top of “Love you”. I hope stitching will slow down everything (even pandemic) over this winter.

ここペンシルバニア州でも本格的な冬の到来です。襤褸のジャケットを着ても、それはそれでもちろん寒い……のですが、決して凍えるという感じがしないのが不思議な所。寒いけど凍えない。上手く言葉にできずに申し訳ないですが、着て頂けたら伝わるんだろうなと思ったり。

今年はとてもとても大変な一年になりました。余裕がない時は、クリスマスや年末年始といった家族と一緒に過ごす時間の中でも、お互いに”優しく”なれる時間が少なくなりがちですが、刺し子をする時間が、少しでも心の拠り所になって、優しくなれるきっかけになれば幸いです。
