atsushijp, 2020年11月2日

In my understanding, a majority of western people believe in monotheism such as Christianity. In Monotheism, there is only one God. God makes what is right. God forgive them. It is understandable that western people naturally expect to ask what is “Right”. It is ordinary.

☆

The Japanese who practiced Sashiko lived with Animism. They believed every single matter had spirit (God) in it. We call it eight millions of Gods, and that’s my belief in Sashiko too. Since everything has spirit, there is no such a thing as “Absolute Right”. Abundance (Ignorance) is probably the only unfortunate thing they could do. Sashiko was developed in the ordinary, and the ordinary people in Japan believed this Animism along with Buddhism. So, it is natural to have several – millions of “Right”.

☆

I understand that we all want the “answer” – what is “Right”. In Sashiko, there are many techniques & wisdom to make it better. However, there are no “rules”, just enrichment. Please doubt what you know when you learn in Sashiko. Please keep learning. Please listen to the (silent) voice. “No Right and Wrong” is not so easy because it is You who have to decide what is “true”. You decide what you want to pass down – not someone with loud voices. Therefore, along with my teaching, I share so many stories so I want you to understand what Sashiko is.

☆

(I am not well-educated about western beliefs. If you think it is not correct, please drudge this post.)

A beautiful day today.

2018年5月2日

A beautiful day today. Finally enjoying the weather in T-shirt. Although I haven’t completed the project, it is a good day to shoot a photo. It is too late to catch the full bloom, but the denim & Sakura is also beautiful. Sashiko. Repair. Denim. Well, regardless of my projects,…

I completed the second Sashiko mask. It isn’t easy to be a home-school teacher & business manager & artisan. Well… I am not as good a home-school teacher as I wish to be. ☆ Sashiko mask takes about 5~10 times longer to make in comparison to the regular fabric mask….

I often write: Sashiko/Boro is NOT ◯◯. I understand your wonder (or frustration) why I do not offer the correct definition instead of saying “NOT”. Well, as you may guess by now, since Sashiko/Boro existed in the ordinary, there is no “one correct definition”. It differs based on many elements….

My thought now is that if the fabric feels ‘better’ afterwards, I could be content.

As a westerner this makes a lot of sense to me! And as someone who teaches hand sewing, there is so much anxiety and concern about “getting it right.” I really appreciate the way you wrote about this.

At this point of evolution, most westerners are so culturally mixed, they just don’t know it, not all are Christians either, many seek answers in other cultures. Most humans are digging deep to find meaning in their lives. Maybe a deep calling in their DNA, hidden ancestral lineage calling to be discovered. We are all one, this is truth. In right and wrong there are no possibilities. There is only what “is”.

this is beautiful, thank you. i only learned about sashiko last night (trying to focus on something beautiful and creative instead of u.s. election results), so i know very little. your words really resonate with me: westerners seeking the “right” answer when there are many good answers. that often leads people here (in the u.s.) to reject others for being different, which breaks my heart. i’m also very interested in the concept of “abundance (ignorance)”. i have not seen those two ideas put together like that before, and yet i think they are the two greatest flaws of my country. thank you so much for sharing your art and wisdom. i feel like i was meant to learn from you to help me get through today and grow. ❤️
