Do you like Sashiko?

Do you like Sashiko?

–

Or

–

Do you like “something you may get (attention, recognition, superiority, fame and/or fortune)” by saying it’s Sashiko?

–

–

I am not here to judge anyone. I just don’t want people to change the culture that Sashiko identify.

–

–

I understand if they want to be “rich” by shouting the word “Sashiko (or Boro)”. Money is important. I know that kind of person in the past. I will probably meet them in future. As some advise me, I cannot change it. I shouldn’t even try. So, I am sharing so “YOU” can choose what can be preserved.

–

–

The Authentic Boro is “almost” impossible to make. However, we can try to make it by understanding deeply & caring (synchronizing the feeling). This is the Boro (to be) we work on today, in 2020. This is the “back/hiding” side of this project and so so should Boro.

–

–

We like Sashiko.

I don’t want to change the Sashiko we like.

I appreciate many reactions to the Story I had posted today (6/11). I need to clarify one thing. I am NOT “angry-at” and/or “disgusted-by” non-Japanese who use “Sashiko/Boro” for their money-making. In fact, I would like to talk to them about what/how they do for a better understanding of Sashiko/Boro…

I sometimes say, “I feel pain (when I face ignorance/indifference)”. To be honest, I haven’t figured out how to define/explain this “pain” well. It hurts, so it is painful, but it doesn’t make me angry so much… more like sad… or even “sorry (for them)”. The actual pain comes from…

(From the previous post) One of the core approach of “Morita Therapy” is “あるがまま (Aru-ga-mama)” which can be translated to “as is / acceptance”. In my learning of psychology, this was an eye-opening moment. ☆ When we (West) experience illness, we try to remove it from our body as if…

I have conflicting feelings about my like for boro, which initially stemmed from my interest in indigo. I think Boro carries a great deal of pathos because of it’s history, which in a tangential way I can relate to because I am only one generation removed from peasantry. My father’s family were very poor and lived in rural Bengal under Imperial British colonialism. But the main reason I admire it is because it is an example of the tāntric principle of rising from the gross to the subtle. Though I do think it’s monetary value is derived from capitalism and capitalism’s ideas about scarcity.

I like Sashiko as it reminds me I’m trying to live sustainably and mend my clothes and not throw them out (and continue to love them). I am not sure that is the original meaning of Sashiko or Boro. I am willing to learn more.

I am learning, also learning about the Sashiko Boro technique, my encounter with this technique was totally casual, when I understood I loved it and fell in love with it, I try to make some test pieces in some fabric and also restore my own clothing, my knowledge It is limited, but what I love about Sashiko Boro is the transformation of a garment to later become something else. I humbly believe that by making this transformation I can help reduce buying more clothing, also helping to take care of my environment, Sashiko for me is also how I connect with my breathing and internal as a meditation to find myself that allows me a long conversation with my being. 👘💚🙏✨✨✨

Is using/wearing out an essential part of how a boro comes into being?

When I touch a piece of Boro, the thought of all the hands that have cared for and stitched that fabric over the generations is awe inspiring. I think of the love and time that went into stretching the useful life of the jacket/ futon cover/ zokin, and imagine all the people that have used this fabric over the years. The use and wear and repair all leave their mark. It’s an honor to hold these items that came from humble beginnings, born of necessity and poverty, but full of the beauty of age.
