In Sashiko stitching, many focus on the type of patterns they would like to stitch beautifully. We also focus on what kind of fabric we use for the Sashiko stitching. In most cases of working with the vintage fabric, we do not decide the pattern. The fabric will tell us what kind of pattern would be good together. It is another “dialogue” between the fabric and us. Another form of silent voice, and the communication I would like to pass down. There is nothing wrong in choosing the picturesque pattern for Sashiko stitching. On top of that, please try to listen to the fabric which pattern they may want to have. The answer may be simple parallel lines.

英語で頂く質問の中で、「どんな柄を刺せば、”刺し子”と呼んでも良いですか？」というものがあります。個人的な見解ですが、どんな柄を刺しても、刺し子で良いんじゃないのかなと思っています。勿論、刺し手には、刺し子が日本の言葉で、日本の文化から成り立っているということは尊重して頂いた上で。柄で全てが決まる程、刺し子は単純ではありません。難しくないけど、「この柄を刺せばいい」という程の浅いものではなく、柄や刺し方含めて、その人柄が出る手仕事だと思っています。

どんな柄でも良いんです。僕は古典柄好きだし、親父は般若心経が好きでした。絵的なものを刺し子で表現しても全く問題ないと思っています。ただ、古布を使う場合は是非「布からのメッセージ」も聞いてみて下さい。僕たちが特注を受ける際、古布を多用する作品の場合は、柄の指定は「ご希望を伺うだけ」にとどめています。それは、「布が刺す柄を伝えてくる場合」があるからです。時にシンプルな平行線が、一番の最適解だったりします。そういう意味でも、刺し子は「布との会話」なんだろうなと思うのですよね。僕自身はまだまだ「聞き手」としての能力が足りず、失敗ばかりです。
