Many focus on “Patterns & Designs” in Sashiko. So do we. Same as other crafting & arts, it is important to learn the designs in making Sashiko. However, interestingly, the best design on the paper isn’t equal to the best Sashiko item. A top-notch graphic designer’s pattern may not be the best design in Sashiko. I often wonder why.

☆

One of my interpretations is that Sashiko is created by stitches – not by line. A print or a machine-stitch will probably make the top-notch design the best design even on the stitching. However, since they are all hand-stitched, a sophisticated design may not be as good as the simple parallel lines. We are still learning. Some occasionally advise us, “hire the best designer. Their design will make Sashiko more famous”. We aren’t sure about that. Neither of us have education in design/art school, but we have been living with Sashiko for a long time. We are humble to learn something new. At the same time, we are confident to say that Sashiko requires “something” to make it “cool”, “cute”, and “beautiful”.

☆

Our goal in production is quite simple. We would like to keep making a Sashiko pieces that people would like to have it in their ordinary days.

An interesting thing about Sashiko is that it increase the beauty by time. The Kamon Sashiko on Indigo Fabric looks so beautiful since the color faded over time. Ah. 2017-05-25 06:54:18 Source

I decided to step out of my comfortable zone to protect my own identity. Only one way I found to protect is “to share” my own stories so that someone may receive & keep the Sashiko I have been living with. I was born with being “decided” to be the…

After all, when it comes to “Preserving the Culture”, what matters are “Responsibility (Readiness to take)” and “Seriousness (level of commitment)”. If one is aware of where they stand, then the level of responsibility & seriousness can be balanced. When this balance is disturbed, then Cultural Sustainability also faces the…

Regarding design. Graphic designers typically design on a 2-dimensional surface. Whereas sashiko is on clothing, something soft, with drape, with warp and weft, with wear patterns. Sometimes you don’t discover the “life” of what you are designing for until you actually start stitching. The designer has to adapt and enter into a conversation with the surface to get the design to work. It’s a “living” sculpture.
