Yes, the beautiful white & pink threads in the previous photo were the Sashiko Thread. So are these beautiful blue threads. I used white & pink thread for a project that I am enjoying now. In Sashiko’s tradition, the Japanese used mainly white thread on the Indigo fabric (and there are reasons/stories why it became the tradition). “Indigo & White” is my favorite combination as well. However, color is one of many areas we can be creative with respecting the tradition. You may wonder if I dislike the colorful Sashiko – the fact is “Not At All”. I grew up in a colorful Sashiko environment.

☆

Keiko officially started dyeing the thread early in 2000’. She desperately wanted the color that “age” with sharing the same moment with vintage fabric. It is not a matter of which is better or worse in Natural Dye and Synthetic Dye. It is the matter of “creativity” of how we want fabric & thread age together (or differently). Regardless, our Sashiko is based on an assumption that we enjoy Sashiko items for a long time – not only for a season – more like a few decades, if possible. The thread matters to make it happen. Color can be a great area to be creative. However, I want the stitcher to know the difference in Sashiko Thread. (One of the shinning blue is one of a kind Logwood blue mainly available in the U.S. by @upcyclestitches).

While Atsushi offers workshop in NYC, Keiko had fun with her students in Patchwork/Boro making in Japan. So global. 2017-11-10 01:16:06 Source

Originally, Japanese practiced Sashiko in harsh conditions with limited resources. They didn’t have choices to “replace” fabrics. Holding the precious, yet roughly woven fabric, they stitch to make fabric last long. I imagine… they wished they would have enough resources to replace fabric. They didn’t want her family to look…

Today, 10/16, is the anniversary of my father’s decease. Everything changed on today in 5 years ago, and with many miracles, I am here with Sashiko again. Every year around this anniversary, I realize that I look like him more and more. I wish I could do Sashiko stitching with…

I love colourful Sashiko! White thread on indigo fabric is the traditional one but to be creative means to maintain tradition alive! I enjoy your projects!🇦🇷
