“Whatever” can be a quite violent word when they talk about the foreign culture that they are not familier with. For example, it is understandable to talk about the threads for the Sashiko stitching in Japanese with saying “Whatever threads is good” after some trials of several Sashiko threads & other threads. However, it can be quite dangerous to define “whatever thread is good for Sashiko” without experience & knowedge can repaint the process – and more importantly, culture itself.

It is true that Sashiko is a culture out of poverty, so “using whatever thread” is(was) fine. They didn’t have a choice to choose the “best” Sashiko thread.

However, saying “whatever” without learning the history (process) mean ignoring the development over time.

The people used the very thin & fragile thread for Sashiko.

They realized that thte thin & fragile threads are not ideal for Sashiko.

Therefore, they twisted the threads to make the better threads for Sashiko. It is the reason we have a choice today. It is one of my mission to protect the industry of Sashiko & Sashiko Thread.

I talked about the difference in “Tradition” and its translation – ”伝統” and “伝承”.

It is easy to jump to the conclusion. Many reach to this account for the “quick answer”.

However, please try to learn the history & stories – so you will know “what is the best” for your Sashiko stitching.

I started teaching Sashiko in English in 2017 following teaching Sashiko in Japanese online. Back then, I wasn’t sure what to teach because Sashiko was too ordinary for me to “teach”. However, thanks to many students, then friends, and then rising artisans, I am confident that I can offer some…

It was a quite wild month, March 2024. We went through several big decisions in life, and I feel positive that we made good decisions. We all fear the “Changes”. Therefore, it is very challenging to change when we “try” to change it. An effective way to change oneself is…

In Traditional Japanese craftsmanship, there is a word that I cannot fully translate to English. It is “職人 (Shokunin)”. The direct translation is a “craftsperson”, but I feel the description is incomplete. It is a strict, and very Japanese-like world there. For example, an apprentice to a traditional Sushi bar…
