In a last couples of weeks, I had received some messages worrying on Cultural Appropriation (C/A) with Nike’s shoes (Nike SB Dunk Low Denim Sashiko: for the photos, you can check tags such as The messages are with sympathy(worries) to the pain that I would be feeling. I really appreciate it. However, Sashiko Nike shoes does(did) NOT hurt my feelings.

☆

I am still in the process of learning the concept of C/A. Therefore, I do not know if Nike’s Sashiko Shoes will be categorized as C/A. However, as an artisan who tries to pass down the Sashiko we practice, the news didn’t hurt my feelings like someone’s comment saying “Sashiko is Art so ‘whatever’ is fine”. I am responsible to explain this difference & my feeling, so please read the Patreon Article below. I plan to open it to the public for a few weeks.

☆

Since I am not an expert in C/A, what I write here is a mixture of my knowledge and feeling. I hope the article explains my honest feeling about it. BTY, I personally respect Nike’s vision (The story behind JDI), so I may be biased.

ThanksGiving is coming in the US. Before I learned about ThanksGiving in history, it was just a week of huge sales. After learning what ThanksGiving is (was), it became a day to think what “Thank” is for us – from many perspectives. ☆ It is my belief – without imagining…

I am a mere Sashiko artisan – who just learned the word “Cultural Appropriation (C/A)” in 2019 after a painful experience. I try to learn not only my pain, but the possible pain for others. I am still learning C/A, but please do not worry about it too much especially…

My view is that Sashiko as much as it is an art, it is a discipline. If an art form/discipline is not performed accurately or is diluted/perverted in any form, it is no longer the same. It should be called something else. There is a difference for example between ramen and spaghetti. Budo and boxing. Sake and beer. One should not be used to misrepresent the other. These are all simple examples. The complexities for me are far deeper. Culturally. The zen. The traditional essence. But unfortunately many do not see this deep and fail to see the true unique beauty of things in life. I appreciate Sashiko as one of them and I can only imagine what it means for you🙏🏾

Nike’s use of sashiko is obviously a young’s designer easy pay check no work or development just take which seems to be this days norm.

I just wish they would have used recycled denim or something similar (if they did I’m not aware) . I feel that would have fit more with the heart of Sashiko

Now there are too many idiots and assholes in this world who are ready to be offended and insulted for the slightest reason and even without it. Such people should be sent to a psychiatric hospital, and politicians and public figures promoting the victim’s worldview should be imprisoned for the rest of their lives.
