A disciple visited a Zen Master for learning.

While he was asking for master’s wisdom, the master kept pouring tea into his cup. The master kept pouring, and the tea overflow then wet the floor. Yet, the master doesn’t stop. The disciple said, “Master, the cup is full. It is meaningless to pour more tea.” and the master replies, “Yes, your mind is like this cup”.

This is a story from Zen teaching (in my memory). This teaches us to empty our mind when we learn something new. Beautiful story to read, SUPER hard to practice. Emptying the mind isn’t easy as it sounds.

The Workshop/Class I provide is an opportunity to empty your “current” mind. The class teaches the technique & new skills, but I will help students to learn something I want them to learn, instead of what they want to do. The class can be very “uncomfortable” because they are new to them – but I am here to help to emty their cup.

「刺し子は味噌汁だ！」という例え話が好きなのは、昔から寓話が好きだった事に起因しているように思います。たぶん、メッセージ性があって、でも不思議なお話が好きなんだと思います。

「空の茶碗」という寓話があります。お師匠様が弟子の悩みを聞く中で、弟子の茶碗にお茶を注ぎ続けるというお話。溢れてもずーっと注ぎ続ける師匠に、「もうお茶は入りません」と弟子がいう。そして師匠様が、「お前はこの茶碗だ」と。

現代社会では、この茶碗を常に満たして置くことが必要とされているのかもしれません。何かあったら飲めるように。何かあったら生き延びれるように。でも、何かを学ぶ際には、空にする必要もあるんですよね。この、「空にする」という行為、英語圏では本当に難しいようで（笑）。刺し子について僕に英語で講釈をする人は、たぶん空にできないまま、何かと刺し子を混ぜちゃったんだろうなぁと。
