Sashiko Live Streaming, August 22nd

After learning the word “Cultural Appropriation” in 2019 after sad experience, I have been sharing my understanding of “Cultural Appropriation” in Sashiko – I believe I am very flexible in accepting “What Sashiko is”.

One may say, “I am not stitching as good as you are. So I don’t know if I should call it Sashiko.”

One may say, “I don’t know much about Sashiko. So should I say, ‘New Sashiko’ or ‘Sashiko Inspired’?”

It is another great time for me to share how I feel. Talking has another effect on top of writing.

(A lack of) Technique & knowledge will not define if it is “Cultural Appropriation” or not. Not being able to stitch & Not knowing is not the issue at all. The issue is: to give up in learning. To say “whatever” to the stories behinds the word. The ignorance over caring. The freedom over the stories.

If one is willing to care about the Sashiko & its story behind it, I encourage them to call their stitching Sashiko regardless of their “current” skill and knowledge. Please read the article “Cultural Appropriation in Sashiko”. The link is available from our profile, or simply visit https://upcyclestitches.com/cultural-appropriation-in-sashiko/

What does “mindfulness” mean to you? Sashiko is often tagged with “mindful stitching.” However, if they are thinking “being mindful” equal to “stitch slowly”, then a core of Sashiko is missing there. In my understanding, as long as one pursues the result (beautiful, artistic, or perfect), the moment of mindfulness…

I had such a great time in Brooklyn last weekend for the Sashiko Workshops. As always, I am a bit burned out after the big matters to me. This time, I took days off to focus on recovery first. @loopoftheloom displayed our item so nicely. I feel like our Sashiko…

Have you heard the concept of High and Low Context Culture (Edward T. Hall, 1976, “Beyond Culture”)? I’ve been following some discussions about Cultural Appropriation (C/A), and in some cases, I got upset to protect the Sashiko culture. However, in other cases, I could observe the “not-on-the-same page” discussion. It…
