atsushijp, 2020年8月8日

A video I found online gave me enormous pain – that I couldn’t breath for a while. A person making holes on nice fabric with using a stick Flat File, then mend it, and call it “Boro” phrasing “Art” introducing their new “collection”. This is why I do not call Boro “Art”.
☆
【Damaged Fabric → Mending & Sashiko Stitching → Becomes Boro.】 Yes. The scene I watched – “artificial process of damaging the fabric” – can be categorized as Boro as well. However, it doesn’t carry the spirit of Boro. Why in the world does one person need to damage good conditioned fabric? For the artistic purpose? Then, find another word… Boro carries the Japanese spirit of survival and shame.
☆
I felt a pain as if I heard a scream from the fabric. The result is of course horrible in my preference. Therefore, I keep saying, please know who you are purchasing “it” from. Anyone can say anything in this world. There are many items with the words “Sashiko” and “Boro”. Do they really understand the message behind the words? Do you hear a voice from what you are about to get? (The photo is the “Boro” I work on now – the opposite of damaging the fabric. Caring. ).

It is not my intention to enhance a border between Japanese and Non-Japanese in a process of sharing Sashiko. Please do not take my message as “Japanese vs Non-Japanese”. I am just saying, “sad experiences I had experienced in the last few years” happened in English language. It doesn’t mean…

We will be busy updating our online store this week. Indigo Dye Thread first, then we have Persimmon (Kakishibu) Dye thread for sale. Wait for updates. They are so natural and so beautiful. Thread 2017-08-07 17:23:15 Source

Thank you for your time to write comments in the previous post. I am, of course, aware that not everyone agrees with what I say, but receiving a reply “Shame on You” for sharing my feelings was confusing. ☆ It isn’t easy to share a (meaningful) message every single day…

For the almighty dollar. Because it will sell to those who HAVE to have any new fashion trend.
Ripping holes in perfectly good jeans was the trend for years. I’m guessing that wearing jeans that look to have have been repaired is the new fad.

Completely agree! Hate seeing “distressed” jeans being manufactured. What a waste of the world’s resources!

That is very sad indeed. I hope that people who are looking to express something through a “boro”-like style will understand that something made in such a way is not true to the spirit of what they like. 😔 I hope people will remember that mending and taking care of our clothing was a necessity for our grandparents and we should not take our privileges for granted. So wasteful and shameful to do so.
