Thank you for the many comments on yesterday’s post. There are no answers for my question yesterday. I am not looking for a quick answer as well. I am perfectly fine with someone calling me “Artist”. As long as I know who I am & what I am doing, the “label” is just a compliment. It is an honor to me. Being said, here is my insight of “Art”.

The value (price) of Art is determined objectively, not subjectively. Anyone can make their own Art – and they can be an artist to express themselves. When one subjectively thinks they is an artist, then they is. However, “living as an artist (professional)” is a different story. I do not have any education in Art. So, “you” makes us the artists. “Customers” who purchase our Sashiko items (finished item) make us the (Professional) Artist… It happened before so we are here. I don’t know about the future.

Yes, anyone can make an art… however, I feel a pain when someone uses the word “Art” as an excuse to not to learn something new. “Sashiko is an Art, so we can do whatever we want” is a very painful statement because it can repaint the original culture. They can surely do whatever they want, but then the word “Sashiko” doesn’t need to be in the context. Often, “Sashiko-Art / Boro-Art” that I see do not carry the spirit of Sashiko. I just want to share that I feel a pain when someone justify themselves by the word “Art” for their possible cultural repainting. The word “Art” is not a panacea in respecting the culture.

If possible, please help me to be the “Sashiko Artist” – so one day, I can remove the pain.

After reading through many of you IG captions, I have begun to know that Sashiko has a very broad and deep meaning. It can have the outward presentation of being artfully done. But, it is in the “craftsmanship” that a higher meaning evolves. It is fine and precise work that displays the hand of the maker but it also is about the form for the function that it is meant to meet. And it also holds the time of the culture. So with art, craft, form, function and culture—it is very full.
Excelente 👏👏👏 Artista Sashico ♥️♥️♥️….Felicitaciones por defender tu cultura ♥️♥️♥️
My understanding is that the spiritual and cultural aspects of the practice of the Art of Sashiko and Boro are far more important than the title ‘ Artist’. For me personally, to ‘Master’ the Art of Sashiko/Boro would demonstrate ultimate respect for the ancient cultural practice and I feel that you ‘honour’ your culture in your daily practice. Thank you for sharing your outstanding work.
👏👏👏
Eu considero o meu bordado inspirado no Sashiko! Tenho lido tudo que encontro sobre o sashiko e vejo o quanto o meu bordado está longe de ser Sashiko!
