Do you check your email while eating? Do you bring your phone to the bathroom? D

atsushijp, 2020年7月24日

Do you check your email while eating? Do you bring your phone to the bathroom? Do you have time to realize what you are doing? Is mindfulness right next to you? I mean, do you read what I write mindfully…?

☆

I am NOT judging anyone. I am a workaholic, so I check emails on the phone all the time. I feel always insecure so I never stop learning (reading & inputting). It is difficult to be mindful in this “speed” society, where “fast” becomes a standard in success. Sashiko can be an antithese for this efficient & productive optimized society – We cannot use both hands for anything else but Sashiko while doing Sashiko, so we have to be mindful of what we are (were/will be) doing while enjoying Sashiko. Seriously, when was the last time you did something for an hour without checking your phone?

☆

I practice meditation daily. I realize Sashiko has similar effects in meditation. When a stitcher keeps criticizing how their stitching looks, then the mind isn’t there. When a stitcher forgets where they are in the “rhythm”, we can somewhat “enjoy” the emptiness. Mindfulness and emptiness are 2 different things, but in this society, emptying our brain by moving both hands are kind of a precious time. Zen teaches us that words will not give us the true realization – only practice brings us to the truth. Same goes for Sashiko. I hope my Live Streaming will be like a radio for you to listen, learn, & stitch while being mindful.

A project without any specific plan… then end up with patching swatches with adhesive thread that I got recently from Japan. No planning project enhance the visual of “Boro-ish” and I kind of think that the Japanese a few hundreds of years ago were no different from today’s project. Just…

The Sashiko Face Mask we made in 2020, which I introduced on this account from scratch, is now being exhibited in ROM as a part of “Unmasking the Pandemic” Exhibition. It is a great honor to be part of this. Since it is difficult for me to travel to ROM…

Originally, Japanese practiced Sashiko in harsh conditions with limited resources. They didn’t have choices to “replace” fabrics. Holding the precious, yet roughly woven fabric, they stitch to make fabric last long. I imagine… they wished they would have enough resources to replace fabric. They didn’t want her family to look…

I feel the same way! I started sewing clothes by hand because the sewing machine was intimidating to me. After a while, sewing by hand became my preferred method because putting that amount of concentration into something that I am making with my own hands grounds me and helps with my anxiety. ( I have 2 very fast-paced and social jobs) Thank you for your always thoughtful posts.

You are very quick to answer emails, so that is good for “business”. As long as you stay in balance everything is okay. I wonder if insecurity creates the need to keep learning. I don’t know. 😊

Last night instead of looking at phone I did Sashiko it was liberating and a light feeling I cannot explain it in words ? Maybe like a release?

Your message is so interesting. We have so much to learn from Japanese culture. I recently started learning Tai Chi because I’m interested in meditation, besides sewing and quilting. Thanks for sharing.
