I hope I make myself clear. I do not exclude others. I simply encourage people to “Think/try” before they ask questions, complain, and “repaint” what Sashiko is. I sometimes receive negative feedback that the needle we recommend has very small needle eyes – the complaint is like “The product says ‘big-eye-straight’, why is the eye so small?” I understand the frustration because threading a needle can be a bothering process (although once the stitcher gets used to it, it is no challenge at all.)

Here, I want you (them) to think about why our Sashiko needles (both Sashi.Co and Tulip Brand) have such small needle eyes. I believe I have talked about it on the Youtube & Patreon page. There are always reasons for what I share. There are multiple reasons to have the small-eye for the Sashiko needle. The product name “Big-Eye-Straight” is based on the fact it has the biggest eye for a good Sashiko needle – not in comparison to the other needles. (I do not consider the bigger eye needle as a “good Sashiko needle” because of the stories behind it).

I plan to talk about the needle a little bit on Friday, in the Sashiko Live Streaming. Why is the needle eye for Sashiko small? It is probably an easy question for you if you follow this account for a long time (@UpcycleStitches may have provided the answer already). There are reasons for that. Try it & practice it. I can almost guarantee that this type of needle will be the necessary tool for a good Sashiko project.

米国で仕事をしていて思うのは、現代は既に「顧客至上主義」の社会であって、昔ながらの職人気質の仕事は、相当に工夫をしないと、すぐに淘汰されてしまうな……ということです。刺し子針。針の目が小さいのには理由があります。でも、「お客様が全て」の市場では、「小さい針の目だから駄目な針」という文化も何もかもふっ飛ばして、個人の未熟さにて文化が塗り替えられてしまうこともあるんです。吃驚する程頻繁に、「糸が通せないから」という理由で返品（使用済みなので再販不可）です。どこまで足掻けるか。100個作って100個完璧にする美学の日本人が、「100個必要で、不良品率が10％なら、110個作ろうとする文化（不良品率は改善しない）」で、何を残せるか。まだまだ勉強が必要です。

私が運針会前に使っていたのは、有名メーカーの刺し子針でした。運針会用に購入したセットの刺し子針は、確かに針穴は小さいので、糸を通す時にコツがいるかもしれません。でも、すぐに慣れましたし、何より刺し心地が断然違います。針でこんなに違うものか?!と思う程、運針がサクサク進みました。もう他の刺し子針には戻れないです。こんなに良いものなのに、どうしてすぐに諦めてしまうのでしょう？糸通し使うとか、いろいろできることはあると思うんだけど。

У нас говорят не “глаз”, а “ушко” угольное. У вашей иглы нормальное “ушко”.
I would assume the eye is small because sashiko is for strengthening the fabric and a bigger eye could possibly damage the fabric…🤔
Completely agree with you on everything. I like the smaller eye ones as well.
海外は自分の価値観が通そうと、無茶な事ですら、あるいは考えたらわかる事ですら、わからない、書いてないから。で通るって、昔海外のお友達が言ってました。。針に糸を通せないから返品は、まだ訴訟にならない分マシかも知れません笑)💦
淳さん、恵子さんの福袋に入っていた針に感動しました。 始めは刺し子セットに入っていた針を使っていました。針穴が大きく通しやすいですが、その分針自体も太くて、布への通りが悪かったです。なので新しく刺し子針セットを手芸店で買いましたが、淳さん、恵子さんの針のような通りの良いものは無かったです。 また買うときはこちらの針しかないと思っています。

I have to laugh, that looks huge to me. The flatter, longer eyes are nice and don’t split fabric. Large round eyes make awful holes.
I did think it odd that the sashiko needles sold here had such a big eye. I thought a smaller one would be better for such stitching and working on old fabrics.
👍Preach. The art of Sashiko is beyond the rugged/repaired aesthetics brand names over use nowadays. Repair work incorporating aesthetic sense like sashiko is not easy to learn.
