How do you define “a professional”? Many Japanese, including myself, define a professional as an individual who receives the money for their service/product/performance. For that, we are the Sashiko professionals. More specifically, I am a professional in sharing the Sashiko.
☆
A phrase of “Sashiko is a beautiful Art. I love doing it” is beautiful and true. However, as a “professional”, the joy often becomes suffering. I receive money for what I do – the responsibility to offer the consideration to their commitment. It isn’t easy. I work hard to fulfil the responsibility. I believe all the professional jobs are the same. “I like it” is sometimes not good enough.
☆
Therefore, I feel a pain when I see an individual teaching Sashiko (for money) saying, “Sashiko is easy and fun”. Sashiko is indeed easy and fun, but it took almost 20 years for me to say that. I am still thinking about what Sashiko is… while being a professional. Anyone can be an expert of anything on the Internet. Reading a few books, stitching for a few weeks can create a quick Sashiko teacher, who also shares the quick answers, which the world is now looking for as instant gratification. My goal as a professional (teacher) is to be like an escort runner. Don’t jump to the quick solution of “how to run fast” without even running. Just start running, I will be there to help when you are tired, lost, and about to give up.

She is one of the Sashiko practitioners that I keep my eyes on. I haven’t met her yet. But she call me a teacher. She learned Sashiko from my Youtube Channel, and then she accomplished this beautiful work. — Very beautiful & stunning. — Anyone can do Sashiko. It is…

I just finished my latest Sashiko sampler panel. I incorporated many of your teachings. I failed on many lines of stitches, and went on to try better on the next row. It is finished. It is not prefect, but I love it and it will be a beautiful walk hanging. I started my next sampler panel and will continue to learn and practice. Thank you for your teachings. Signed, a grateful student. ❤️

“Just start running” – that is definitely where I’m at (with sashiko and with running 😂) and I’m ok with that. I am learning and enjoying the process. My results will improve with time, patience and practice. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on Sashiko – I always find them so helpful. I learn a lot.

So true words. This is happening all the time nowadays, in my opinion. I think that internet with youtube etc has made this being more common. I do love that a lot of handicraft is spread around the world but is also negative. The depth you achieve only buy working hard, looking at older things, watching older/ more experienced people is often no longer highly valued.
Take care and continue your work💙
