atsushijp, 2020年7月11日

The theme of yesterday’s live streaming (on Youtube) was about the “ideal size” of Sashiko stitches. The details are in the Live Archives. As an artisan, what I would like to share is more like “finding your own” rather than “being accurate (by someone’s standard)”.
☆
Once a person can stitch in the rhythm, they stitch without focusing on the results. In a dialogue with thread, needle, and fabric, they find their own “stitches”. I am getting confident in what I am saying here thanks to those who keep enjoying Sashiko after the class/workshop, and keep sharing their work. They indeed find their own Sashiko stitches.
☆
“The Own Stitches” are the products of who they are. Therefore, emotion (not only positive, but any human-like feeling) can be a part of powerful Sashiko. Sashiko is like a “mirror”, in which objectively reflects who I am in the current moment. Since I can watch myself from the 3rd person’s view (like watching a movie), I can relax and calm. It all connects after all. I am just here to share how the dots are (were) connected in the Japanese culture.

I uploaded a video of “Itokiri” focusing on Snipping Sound. I don’t see videos on this type of large fabric… so, I hope the video illustrates what Itokiri is. Please be advised that not all Sashiko projects are suitable for this Itokiri. So, please do it at your own risk…

We are proud of being “makers”. We are Artisans who happen to teach. We are Creators who decided to sell what they use. Yes, “business” is very important to sustain the practice of Sashiko. However, money is not the purpose. Money is just a means to make “Sustainable Sashiko” happen….

“In making Sashiko Denim, do we stitch the denim pants first or mend it first?”. This is a frequent question I receive when I work on denim (in Live Streaming). When we know (or think of) the essence of Sashiko, the answer is decided: We stitch the pants first. Of…
