I am not so particular about the “technique” of Sashiko. My first message is “The Thread Matters”. As long as one enjoys the Sashiko, they do not have to practice Sashiko exactly as I do (although I believe our methods will increase the speed, accuracy, and evenness).
☆
In the process of offering Sashiko Class, I often think “What is really ‘Unshin’ to Sashiko stitchers”. I came up with a hypothesis and it may provide me another conclusion of “Unshin Does Matter” in Sashiko. The Sashiko fabric without Unshin seems a bit “rough” in comparison to the Sashiko with Unshin (which sometimes looks like painting). In the photo, I used the cheapest fabric I can think of in the U.S., and results are quite okay with a bit of roughness. I do not define “roughness” as bad or wrong. Some may prefer that. I thought it was because of the thread, but there may be another factor. Learning never ends.

Thread Matters in Sashiko. Some say, “It is okay to use any thread you have in Sashiko”. This statement is valid when they know the difference in Sashiko Threads – without learning the difference, when they say thread doesn’t matter as long as “thickness” is the same, then it is…

This was unplanned project in the beginning. I just wanted to make a kind of “sample fabric” with the Pastel Colored Sashiko Thread. After improvising the plans so many time, it became kind of unusual but very cool Sashiko Jacket. ☆ Sashiko is all about enjoying the process of mending,…
