Another fun Live Streaming today on Youtube. If you follow this account & Youtube for more than a year, you may know how “different” I was before May 2019. May 2019 is the time when I learned the word “Cultural Appropriation (C/A)” for the first time in my life. I did not know the concept of C/A before. I was part of the “majority” as Japanese. For that matter, I am one of very few Japanese who talks about C/A. When one is in majority, C/A doesn’t become an issue so much. Well, I need to learn about C/A because I am now sharing the Japanese culture (Sashiko/Boro) in “English”. I keep educating myself to understand what/how C/A is.
☆
Many worried “how difficult C/A bothers Atsushi” in May 2019. I wasn’t ready to receive the empathy, though. Some shared their “anger” on behalf of me. I appreciated it, but I couldn’t grasp their anger well. The more I learn about C/A over the year, the more I feel… “Should I get more angry…?”. That is probably the cause of the “Strange” feeling I had shared. I am not angry, though. Strange, it is.
☆
Please read what I write. I spend A LOT OF time writing the way I write. As you know, I NEVER Stated that “Non-Japanese should not use the word Sashiko”. In fact, my message is the opposite (Please read the article on C/A in Sashiko). ☆
I respect an author who wrote on “Wabi-Sabi”, stating something like ”It is impossible to fully explain the concept of Wabi-Sabi, but with love of Japanese culture, please allow me to try it (She is fluent in Japanese, I believe)”. That’s how I feel about Sashiko. I feel it is impossible (and no need) to define what Sashiko is… but I gotta try to share what it is because it is deeply related to my life – as the one who was born in a Sashiko family (while some non-Japanese think they “already know” what Sashiko is). Don’t react so fast. Please be mindful & respectful. That’s all I’m asking. ☆

There is a reason I choose “Instagram” as the main platform – not facebook (I forward it so you can see), not twitter, not pinterest, not tik-tok. First, their mission, “Bringing you closer to the people and things that you love”. Then, Instagram tries to alter “trend” to the “ordinary”…

Well. Sorry for non-Sashiko topic again. It keeps bugging me. I believe this relates to Sashiko in a deeper level. I watched several Greta’s speech. I agree with what she advocates. We need to be serious with the environmental issue. One thing, however, there is one thing I felt “strange”….

Everyone is affected by what they know and don’t know. As much as freedom you have to share what you know, each one of us have that right too. You are deeply connected to this skill. It’s a great opportunity to share what you feel about it in this connected world. Appreciate your efforts in this direction. I am non-Japanese, I appreciate and understand you. While we appreciate C/A or passion for the same, we must remember we can never become someone else because we already what we are 🙏

    刺し子はというか
    すべての手作りは
    何回も繰り返し沢山作って努力して
    モノになっていくような気がします、最初から上手な方もいらっしゃるとは思いますが、私は恐ろしく不器用なので繰り返しは半端なくしています。

I thank you too for teaching me, another English speaker, about your culture. I look forward to your posts! I have been an appreciator of Japanese art for a long time. Within the last year I started doing some embroidery by learning about and practicing Sashiko and Boro. I love it. Thank you!

    編集が効かないというのがよいのだと思います。日常という感じで。今は少し違うと思いますが、刺し子、針仕事は日常でしたからね。私にとって日常になりました
