atsushijp, 2020年5月17日

I will calm down and share “beautiful photos” rather than a lot of writing – for a bit after this post. If you are interested in Sashiko stories, please read the previous posts – there is many reading materials.
☆
A very good point of view. “Once you sell your culture do you really have a say in what they do with it after?” Well… what does “selling a culture” mean? Is offering the supplies for the culture considered as “selling a culture”? Or selling an item (Craft/Art) to make a living will unqualify me to protect the culture? There are many stories I was not on the surface of on the Internet until recently. There are many reasons I have not published a book (yet, hopefully). Umm. Very interesting point of a view. I never thought of myself selling my own culture – more like, I felt I had to say something while the others were selling the culture which may not belong to them.
☆
We were just making Sashiko crafts & offered Sashiko supplies before this Sashiko trend. I wish I could go back there, and I need to keep Keiko out of this trend – for her to keep making what she wants. How does an artisan/artist make a living without selling their “outcome”? Patrons? Are the art/craft for the only wealthy people who have another income? I don’t know. I just need to advocate the Sashiko I had received – stories for reasons. ☆
At the same time, I also learn that I am on SNS. For many people, a photo is more valuable than the text. How it looks is more important than how it really is. However, I believe, what I am doing here is not a waste of time. I may be selling my culture – I have been thinking of this word – but I want to sell it to the person who appreciates the culture so I do not have to say a word for what they do. I believe my customers (friends) are aware of that. Is it too much to ask? I don’t think so. At least, I know it from my past experience. (I will care for the photo’s quality. My goal is to share the Sashiko – not to exclude the others).

Do you know Saori Weaving? We are offering the Sashiko Stitching workshop in a great weaving studio in NYC, Loop of the Loom (@loopoftheloom). I have just started learning the Saori Weaving, but I enjoy many similarities between Sashiko and Saori Weaving – rooted to the Japanese culture. Another trunk…

「刺し子な福袋」についてのご案内が英語の後にございます。 ☆ You may wonder “What is Atsushi’s destination for sharing so many stories & his opinions?”. The goal is simple as I always say: It is to pass down the Sashiko we practice. All the posts here including non-directly-Sashiko-related topics are the vehicles to reach the goal. Some of…

In the past, I once thought it had to be the “Japanese” or “well-experienced” in order to practice the “authentic” Sashiko. I was wrong. I had neglected what I could have done (which is “sharing”), and drew an unnecessary boundary. After almost 10 years, I am confident in saying that…

This is a very beautiful bag! I know you are going through a difficult time with how people are turning sashiko into the latest trend and wish that it wasn’t so painful. I think the trend will pass and I hope that you are still standing strong and continue to be successful when that happens.

    文化を売る、、文化を伝えること(もしくはその過程)で利益を得ているということでしょうか?文化って謳い文句になることはあっても売るれものではないと思うのだけど、、💦

I’m taken aback by the concept of selling a culture. That is wrong in so many ways! Selling items, even skills is not selling a culture. What a particularly twisted view of life (or the worst imperialism). Even for the most capitalist around there’s such a concept as limited rights (see pictures, art etc.)…
