For some reasons, when it comes to “craft/words”, the similar issue becomes a “choice”. One told me “Cultural Appropriation is a term to limit creativity”. Well, don’t they take their shoes off when they are asked to do so in a Japanese house? ‘Not taking shoes off” is a choice, but then why do they visit the Japanese house (especially if they choose to visit – not being invited). ☆
Many people here read what I write mindfully. Thank you. I read all the comments & I learn from them (sorry that I do not reply to all). How can I ask a visitor to take off their shoes if they insist it is their choice (while visiting a Japanese house)? Do we smile and let them in with dirty shoes, or do we kick them out? I don’t want to do either – I want them to be familiar with the Japanese culture (why we take off shoes) since they are interested in a Japanese house. I do not want to be a difficult person – I want to be reasonable. And it is my time to learn how. ☆ – – – ☆

The word respect keeps jumping into my head reading this. I’ve read this post thrice & respect is still there. If you are made aware of a cultural habitat of a nationality such as shoe removal on entering a home you make sure you are wearing clean socks in a good state of repair & shoes that are respectable & easy to remove n put on again. It is just the same with stitching. Respect the techniques.

I helps me think and understand what sashiko means fpr ypu,for tthe culture it was born in (japanese culture) and therefore..it helps me (not a japanese person) understand what sashiko means for me and what sashiko brings within❤️

I would stand in their way and motion with my hands to their shoes and just say shoes please.
Personally I take my shoes off in everyone’s house unless I know I’m going out their back door, but I’m not sure how you could end up in a Japanese household and not take your shoes off. It’s kind of iconic to Japan
