I hope… I wish that many people would enjoy Sashiko not only by the “result” but also as an ordinary practice (prayer). ☆
I make 1 stitch per second comfortably. (I even tried the time attack to see how many stitches I can make in 30 sec – on Youtube). Each stitch (second) is a moment to care (pray), and I call it “practice” – a way of doing “it”. This is what I learn from Keiko by just looking at what she does. Speed is not important, yet devoting oneself into the mindful practice (sort of “selflessness”) can really bring the beautiful result – not “design” itself. ☆
Color selection is not a problem. What one stitches as Sashiko isn’t what I worried about. “How one expresses themselves under the name of Sashiko” is what I am scared of as “Cultural Repainting”. One saying: “I am a Sashiko master. Learn from me.” is an easy way to market them as a creator. However… they cannot continue teaching since their understanding is not that deep, and once they “get bored” at Sashiko, the culture may be repainted by their quickness. That’s what I am scared of – (Before The Internet, this was not a subject to worry because the communication was slow. It took too much time to use the word for marketing unless the one is really interested in the subject. The Internet expedited the communication, and now “a master” with popularity obtains the “authenticity” over its whole picture. I am sure it is happening “Everywhere”.)

That is what I find so absorbing about stitching (and drawing) – mindful care about so many small actions, not mindless repitition, but many small rituals perfected throughout a piece.

My attempts lead to 5 stitches in a minute and that’s with bloody fingertips 😅
