“A Choice”. It is a powerful word. A series of choices form who we are.
I chose to do what I do today – Sashiko. I don’t know if I had chosen to be who I am, but I am proud of myself for doing what I had received. The word “choice” is that strong. It can define one person/culture. ☆
I hear someone saying that “I choose not to use a thimble in Sashiko”. It is a good statement. I respect that. However, my question is, “Do you choose not to use it” or “You do not use it because you don’t know how to use it”? If one insists that a thimble is not necessary in Sashiko without not even knowing how to use it, then wouldn’t it repaint the culture? “Freedom of choice” is a great culture. However, Sashiko was developed in “No choice but stitching”. There are more stories than what one can think of as a trend. I sincerely hope people who want to learn Sashiko will not use “freedom (choice)” as an excuse of “not trying” or “not learning” – which leads to the “ignorance” I dislike the most. A choice should be respected, but it needs to be a choice with responsibility, not a cover-up of ignorance, I believe. ☆ – – – ☆

You have of the thimble choice a couple of times now since I started following you and I just wanted to share some of my thimble perspective. I sew in a few different styles and as such have a couple different thimbles, I have always struggled with them even though in the end they make the work smoother. I avoided using the little middle finger leather thimble for many years until I had to use a sailmakers palm and I found that dedicated practice was the answer (I was young, it wasn’t an answer I favored) so when working those projects I practiced more and I got better, but sometimes the practice came between me and finishing the projects and I would set aside my thimble to do it the hard but familiar way. When I was introduced to the sashiko thimble I was consternated by it’s use, none of the videos I looked up made any sense and most diagrams concerned stitching patterns, not needle thimble use. I was lucky enough to find one of your YouTube videos and all was made clear, one of my more momentous ah ha moments (thank you for that) but still there was practice, so much practice that even though I see how one could/should use the sashiko thimble I often find myself setting it aside to get the job done. So, I guess I have sympathy for choosing not to, though if asked I would recommend continued practice with the thimble as it will make the work go smoother and potentially faster (speed is a complicated motivator)
thimbles can be frustrating and intimidating, please continue to be patient with us. Thank you for sharing so much of your understanding.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
❤️ this theme. I too have different thimbles for different types of stitching. I have tried under expert guidance to use Sashiko thimbles. Unfortunately due to a hand injury due to a car accident my teacher thankfully fashioned a leather glove that I can now use in the same principle as a Sashiko thimble. It is essentially a glove with a coin thimble in the correct position.
@sashi.co I’ve just started using a proper sashiko needle and palm thimble this week. I want to thank you for your amazing video. I had watched it a couple of times and tried to copy using the tools I already had. It didn’t work. As soon as the new needle and thimble arrived it was like magic! The right tools matter! I’m still slow, but it makes sense now. Learning to do things differently is great for our brain! I’m looking forward to building my speed ❤️
