I receive many questions regarding “Am I correct?”. It is a kind question because it shows they care about the origin. Some do not even care if they are correct or not. However, as you may know already with following this account, it is not easy to define what is “correct” and “incorrect” in Sashiko. It is probably the same to many other cultures, or probably any culture in general.
☆
Often, the “Correct” is a result of “someone’s loud voice”. The one who is good at presenting “can” make the “Correct”. Or, frankly speaking, as Dan Brown wrote in “The Da Vinci Code”, “History is always written by the winners…” Therefore, I try not to provide the “definitive answer” by saying there is no such a thing as “Right” and “Wrong” in Sashiko. In fact, it is my wish to collect the silent voices from Japan (It is very difficult, but I am lucky to be born in the environment.)
☆
Yes, I am now becoming a “someone with a loud voice”. A year ago, an unfortunate discussion on SNS woke me up that I cannot continue being silent when the trend may override my own culture. I share what I love about Sashiko, the techniques, and stories. However, as I keep saying, the Sashiko I share is a part of the “Sashiko” in Japan. I am only a branch from a big tree. Therefore, it is very important to share “everything” I have – when people receive what I am sharing in techniques, mindset, and philosophy, then they can find their own “Correct” in Sashiko, as I have found my own “Correct” in Sashiko.

In Traditional Japanese craftsmanship, there is a word that I cannot fully translate to English. It is “職人 (Shokunin)”. The direct translation is a “craftsperson”, but I feel the description is incomplete. It is a strict, and very Japanese-like world there. For example, an apprentice to a traditional Sushi bar…

On Instagram in the morning. On Youtube after noon. I talked why I am doing Sashiko in both Japanese & English. The Japanese version is much smoother (of course), but I hope the English version also could share how Sashiko means to me. It is one of those days that…

It can be hard to say what is correct, but what in your opinion is incorrect?
