Art & Craft cannot be completed by one individual. It is like a circulation/ecos

atsushijp, 2020年3月17日

Art & Craft cannot be completed by one individual. It is like a circulation/ecosystem. For Sashiko, some artisans make fabric, others for threads. Some artisans dye, and others stitch. In order to present a Sashiko piece, we need many experienced artisans. Therefore, it is not easy to revive it after the circulation has been discontinued. Also, artists/artisans are often not good at expressing themselves so it is not as obvious that they are suffering. ☆
If you can, please support the Art & Craft around you. Again, ONLY IF you can afford it after securing your essential & appropriate needs. Cloths, Foods, and Shelter must come before the Art & Craft. Art & Craft is not essential to survive. However, I believe, Art & Craft are very important to sustain who we are. I would like to sustain the society where we can appreciate something “beautiful” and “inspirational” in addition to the necessary things to survive.
☆
Of course, I am not talking only about Sashiko. Anything around you that seems “unessential to survival” may need a bit of support now. The smaller they are, the more they may need a help. Supporting the non-essential is not that difficult. Keep enjoying it. Stitching instead of freaking out by numbers (purchasing supplies from those who try to preserve the culture). Please know that there are people who care about the “unessential” behind the screen, and I would like to protect them even in this scary time. Thank you for your time to read this & Thank you for your support by purchasing our Sashiko supplies.

We sometimes enjoy “new Sashiko” by letting our inspiration go wild. Do you see the difference of these Sashiko stitchies from the ordinary stitches? — Keiko isn’t 100% happy about the result, and it became her “work-cloth” even without finishing the pattern, but hey, the real beauty can be created…

“Cultural Sustainability”. The message is simple: “Please acknowledge the stories & people behind the word”. No need to worry about learning itself – what I ask for is just an acknowledgement unless one is not teaching (teaching comes with responsibility, so one should be expected to have a certain level…

This is a repetitive message, but a very important one from me. I often get a question, “Would it be okay (less painful) if I call it Sashiko inspired?”. This is a thoughtful question. However, honestly speaking, I feel there is no need to add the word  “inspired”. If you…

I want to like every of your posts twice. Also, I want to recommend a book: “Ancient Futures” I hope you can find to read it and it touches your heart like your work touched mine.

🙏🏽 For me, as artist and as a consumer of goods, art in my everyday life is essential. I support other artists, minute by minute , words and my financial support. Thankyou for this message. We each do what we can

    必需品とまでいかなくても、あると便利くらいの位置づけになると随分違うと思うんですけど、、きっとそれも難しいですよね。趣味は経済に影響されやすいけど、細々とでも続ける事で残していけたらなぁ、と思います。

True words. For some in my community their arts & crafts are essential for their survival. It’s their way of easing anxiety, reducing their social isolation and improving their mental health. During this time of social distancing & isolation it has become more important to tend, care and nurture our mental wellbeing. We have set up online craft & chats to help limit our social isolation. Using conference calling we can still do our crafts and interact with each other just like we would if we were in our physical studio. Keep safe everyone and remember that self-isolation doesn’t need to be isolating 💜
