Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

I believe anyone who takes my workshop knows how much I prepare for my teaching

atsushijp, 2020年3月9日

I believe anyone who takes my workshop knows how much I prepare for my teaching opportunity. I have so many years of experience in Sashiko, but so what? Practicing and teaching is different. I am so worried of delivering the incorrect/inappropriate message because what I speak is an action of sharing the culture of who the Japanese are. Therefore, I read my slides over and over, I make a list of stories I can talk after confirming other Japanese natives if my understanding “as a Japanese” is within the ordinary, and I pay super careful attention to avoid any misunderstandings due to my English. ☆
One may say “It is a freedom of teaching what they want”. Yes, true. It is a responsibility of “a student” to choose who they want to learn from. Therefore, I speak up. Please, please choose who you learn from. It doesn’t have to be me if you don’t like my style. However, please choose your teacher “attentively” and please avoid an “instant” teacher in Sashiko/Boro. ☆
It is not my comfort zone to say something this strong, but this is a matter of my origin. This is not a math problem that one can find a mistake later on and correct it. It is about a culture, and “freedom of teaching” can alter the culture unintentionally (and intentionally). Please be a smart & caring learner as I want to be a smart learner as well. If you want to teach Sashiko (for your passion, not for $$), then come to me. I will teach you everything I have (although I am still in a journey of learning). This is just too sad to even write like this. I hope I am not saying something crazy. Same thing goes for being a smart customer. Please. Your/Our small action will decide the future. We know the impact of our choice, don’t we?

I often use “味噌汁 (Miso Soup)” to explain what Sashiko is in Japanese. The ordinary & a character of “No Right and Wrong”.  ☆ Pouring hot water to Miso doesn’t make regular Miso Soup. Often, Miso soup requires the “Dashi (kind of broth)”. A choice of Miso & Dashi makes…

In NYC for the weekend Workshop. Exciting & looking forward to meeting Sashiko fans. I am here with my Boro Jacket, as always! NYCにいます。 明日の下準備を終え、知人のマンションにてお世話になります。それにしてもニューヨーク。ホントに凄い町。ちょっとした観光気分の写真は@handmaking_dad にてアップしようと思います。 2018-01-11 21:05:38 Source

Read between lines. Listen to the silent voice. Appreciate the origin. ☆ These 3 lines can be idiotic to follow when the goal is to win. Contract (what is written), a loud voice from as charisma, and innovation over the origin will bring them a “success”. Well, I would like…

Not crazy at all. It’s an important message. I always find what you have to say very thoughtfully measured.

I love everything you say here. Nothing crazy. No misunderstandings for me. I love your description of your “…teaching opportunity”, your wisdom in understanding that “practicing and teaching is different”, your dedication to adequate preparation and your plea for us to be a ‘smart & caring learner’. With much respect 🙌
