atsushijp, 2020年3月2日

One of the frustrations I feel when I see the word “Sashiko” in a non-Japanese-related context is that they often focus on the “result”. The result is important, but the result is merely the result. Sashiko is more than that, I believe. The core is somewhere else, and the core is what the society is in need. ☆
“Am I doing it right?”// ”Do I Sashiko stitch correctly?”. I understand that question, but before questioning, I want them to feel and wonder why they hand-stitched. ☆
Stop judging yourself. Learn to be okay with what you do & who you are. Instead of judging yourself, start caring for others. Then, one will care for the origin of Sashiko instead of trying to be “right” or “popular” in this Sashiko trend. I do not think the Japanese people practiced Sashiko with worrying about being “correct”. They stitched for the family who suffer from the poverty & severe winter. It is a practice of care – do not repaint it by an opinion.

Indigo Dye… so called “Japanese Blue” is always my favorite in Natural Dye. When Keiko and I decided to “sell” her Natural Dye Sashiko Threads, we made one rule as our challenge – which is to keep “Continuously and Reproducibility”. As we dye by hand with Natural Ingredients, the colors…

In Traditional Japanese craftsmanship, there is a word that I cannot fully translate to English. It is “職人 (Shokunin)”. The direct translation is a “craftsperson”, but I feel the description is incomplete. It is a strict, and very Japanese-like world there. For example, an apprentice to a traditional Sushi bar…

Having seen the Boro exhibition in Asakusa I find it amazing that they could find the time and energy to put in such beautiful patterns.
