“Tradition” is a tricky word. As much as I like the traditional look of Sashiko, my message is “to respect” the tradition – My message is NOT limiting the creativity by tradition. Words are not enough because we read what we want to read. What I am writing here is simple and consistent. Please care for the Japanese (culture, mindset, philosophy, stories, the ordinary, and people behind) Sashiko. One example of “caring” is a willingness to learn. What I will fight back is ignorance, which could lead to minimising my reaction. ☆
Photo is a surface of non-traditional Sashiko by Keiko. Can you guess what kinds of fabrics Keiko used to make this unique appearance? It is not Boro. The answer will be in the next post. Enjoy the Live Steaming talking about what “tradition” is for Sashiko.

Getting ready for Sashiko NYC in 2 days, and the Sashiko Weekend is coming. We may have a pop-up store type of deal by appointment. We will have a lot of Sashiko thread and Japanese Vintage fabric available in Tribeca. NYC!! Exciting!!

I am NOT asking/expecting you to agree with me on what I share all the time. Of course, I would like you to agree with & like me. However, since I sometimes say something strong, I understand if you disagree. The voice from another culture is occasionally uncomfortable to take…

People say, “You can enjoy Sashiko as you wish”. Using a thimble or no thimble. A knot or no knots. I agree with them we all have options to choose from. Some of Sashiko in Japan use a thimble, the other Sashiko don’t. ☆ The Sashiko we practice has stories…

My guess is hessian, or perhaps unbleached linen. The texture is very pleasing to look at.
