As much as I wish to share Sashiko, I am willing to learn. ☆
After completing 30% (!?) of packing to QuiltCon2020, I start wondering, what is MQG’s “Modern” indicate. I focused on my Sashiko workshop so much that I almost forgot the important learning opportunity: To understand what I am going to work for. After studying the MQG’s website, I learned that “Modern” can be defined in various ways. I like it that way, and I feel the same way about Sashiko. I am here to share the “Sashiko”, but not excluding the “modern” or “something new”. What I am asking is just to respect (to learn) the tradition (Japaneseness).
☆
I have a question, though. Would a member of MQG accept a “painting” which looks like quilting as “quilting”? In my understanding, quilting is a process of sewing 2 or more layers of fabric with batting. If the work is not sewn (stitched), would they call it “Modern Quilt”? How much “freedom” is acceptable? I am excited to learn a lot over the next week.

Sometimes, Sashiko is misrepresented as “Slow-Stitching”. It is true that Sashiko encourages us to slow down in modern extremely busy days as we use both hands & spend hours of time. However, it doesn’t mean that one needs to stitch slowly. In fact, many Sashiko Artisans have quite skillful hands…

Sashiko is well-known for the beauty in imperfection. You know the value of being imperfect. Accepting the beauty in imperfection, we can stop judging others, especially oneself. Trust me. I know I am the one who judges myself all the time. lol. ☆ What I want to share is not…

Many told us that our Sashiko is “Traditional”. We often use the word “Traditional” in contrast to “Modern (Contemporary)”. I have another perspective on “Tradition”. It is an “accumulation” of people’s knowledge, wisdom and story. I am sharing all of “my tradition” so that we can pass down the Sashiko…

Is sashiko stitched only from the top? Rather than 2 wrong sides together, and then presses open with an iron?
