atsushijp, 2020年2月4日

Once I found an advertisement for the event saying “Sashiko technique” and “Learn the tradition”, which was not related to the traditional Sashiko in my understanding. I asked the person (who posted) how they decided to link the event to the word “Sashiko”. There may be information/documents I don’t know. I am still learning as well. However, they refused to share their information/source saying something like “We do not wish to have a discussion based on a personal opinion over the Internet”.

This is how cultural repainting starts when we focus on “freedom”. What I say here is indeed my personal opinion (insight). However, it is based on my actual life. It is my experience and the actual stories I have received. Please, please help me to prevent cultural repainting. I will correct my understanding of Sashiko when someone with more information/documents shares their knowledge & wisdom. I am aware that my information is limited. However, spreading the information for their marketing purpose with the name “Sashiko” is just too much. A discussion based on personal experience & history DOES matter to pass down the culture – here, Sashiko. Please. No more “whatever we want” and “just because” – there are people & many stories behind the word.

Is it some “typical manner” for Western people (mostly white people?) to lesson

2021年2月17日

Is it some “typical manner” for Western people (mostly white people?) to lesson others even if one is not asking? I can roughly categorize “messages I receive” into 3 categories. (1) Questions, which is understandable (2) Empathy & Personal Stories – which I sincerely appreciate and (3) Casual “lesson” saying…

I occasionally wonder what “appreciation” means for others. For me, “appreciation” comes with some action. Without action, the phrase “I appreciate it” is kind of a polite way to say “I don’t care”. One say, “I appreciate Japanese culture”. But they step into a Japanese house without taking shoes off…

I have received many good feedback to the short video of Unshin (Needle Movement). Here is a long version of that. You may be able to find these Unshin video on our Youtube Channel as well. Search a channel named Sashi.Co. — 先日紹介した運針動画。とても好評だったので、実際に撮影した分を編集してみました。1分間の運針をお楽しみ下さい。単なる運針と、淳のどうでもいい話が聞けるビデオはYoutubeにてアーカイブが残っております。(Sashi.Coチャンネルで検索下さい) — class=”instagram-media” data-instgrm-permalink=”https://www.instagram.com/reel/BjdKP0jBVn2/” data-instgrm-version=”14″ style=” background: border:0;…

One thing I have learned recently is that sashiko is much more than just running stitch in white thread on blue linen. I hadn’t understood how tiny the stitches are, traditionally. I’m struggling to train myself how to work on such small scale, especially when some of the pre-printed sashiko designs I’ve bought have stitches twice that size.

I heard (but haven’t seen it yet) there is an article on Sashiko in this month’s Martha Stewart magazine. Might be interesting to see how Sashiko is being portrayed for the masses…

I love what you say about passing down the tradition! There IS a right way of doing almost every traditional craft, from wherever it is, and the rest are other things that should be called (in my opinion) different names. Tradition takes learning, practice, respect, and time. I have been drawn towards running stitch since I lived in India and attended a kantha workshop by @sujayamahesh. She teaches the real thing. I hope some day I will get to learn the basics of Sashiko from you or someone like you. All the very best in your mission of preserving your heritage!

Well said. The word ‘Sashiko’ is popping up everywhere. It takes away from the artistry and the meditative act of Sashiko.
