Is Sashiko Art…? I feel Sashiko is not Art.
☆
A big theme to discuss. I spent more than 30 minutes talking in Live Streaming (Archive available on Youtube). As of now, I feel Sashiko is NOT Art for MANY reasons. I know you would disagree with me. I need more education to learn “Art”, yet I feel unnatural to call Sashiko Art at this point. I will keep saying Sashiko is NOT (Fine) Art. Please keep convincing me that Sashiko is Art if you believe so strongly. Just please. Please do not use the word “Art” as an excuse to not to learn the basic & tradition. I have MANY stories that I do not think Sashiko as Art. Your convincing are, hopefully, more than “just because”.

In today’s society with the Internet, anyone can say anything on any topics. We as readers/listeners have to be mindful of what we are reading/listening, and learning. Unlike the past, nothing will validate one’s practice but oneself. I can only hope, but I sincerely hope you are learning Sashiko(and Boro)…

i agree, not fine art. beauty, craft and depth- not lesser than art, just different. cool discussion, look forward to more.💕

I’m learning about sashiko, beautiful in itself, my thought is to add it to some of my art, but I don’t know if I would call the stitching on its own art. It certainly feels like some strong personal style in clothing.

On the other hand, when you plan a piece or clothing using sashiko, there is artistry in the placement of stitches and patterns and the patience and time it takes for stitching. In this way, to honor all the parts of sashiko and the person who created it, sashiko because art, with a specific expertise and creativity.
