I occasionally talk about “what is traditional” in Sashiko. However, I never say that the Sashiko without tradition is bad – the only message I keep delivering is respect to the Japanese culture. It is perfectly fine to be creative and playful in Sashiko. No one in my friendship will be offended unless the one respects the Japanese philosophy in Sashiko. This Jacket is one good example of Keiko’s playful heart. It is interesting. Fabrics talks – there is no “right” answer – there is just a “peaceful conversation” in the fabric. (When there is discomfort – dispute in the fabric, Keiko re-do Sashiko & stitching). ☆

筒描き染めの龍に刺し子、そしてジャケットへ。

「伝統的か」とか「刺し子らしいか」という面倒な問いだけを掲げている訳ではなくて、大切にしているのは「先達への感謝と尊敬」と「遊び心」です。昨年秋に「刺し子とは？」という疑問にぶちあたった理由は今現在日本国内で見る針仕事がきっかけではなく、日本国外での「刺し子……？」という作品（というか宣伝）が目に入ったからです。伝統的かという話をしてしまうと、恵子さん自身が結構前衛的なので、身も蓋もなくなってしまう感じすらあります（笑）。伝統も刺し子らしさも大事ですが、要は「昔の日本で刺し子をしていた人達へ思いを馳せること」を大切にしたいんです。それがどういう形であれ。だから正解も間違いもないよーと常日頃言っている訳です。

これほどの筒描き染め＆龍となると、もう布の持つ力が相当強いので、刺し子が脇役になります。龍の上に針目を重ねるという選択肢もあるとは思いますが、その”塩梅”が恵子さんの能力なんだろうなと思うのです。不思議ですよ。たかが布。されど布。布は語ります。
