I receive many questions regarding a book (books) to learn Sashiko. For the technique & skill of Sashiko, I don’t know a book describing on what I try to share in non-Japanese language. For Sashiko’s history and story, I don’t know a book focused on the cultural side of Sashiko so “I” write in English (some here, more in Patreon). So, unfortunately, I don’t have any recommendations if you are looking for “answers” to your question in publication. However, I do have many books that I would like to recommend to learn Japaneseness and Sashiko. Please try to read some Japanese literature. The literature may be written in an extraordinary setting, but the writing itself could describe the ordinary in Japan. At least, there are numbers of people who spent their enormous effort and time in translating without losing its value. Enjoying Japanese literature may be much worthwhile than reading on someone’s interpretation of “Japanese culture”. ☆

読書に目覚めたのは14歳と、本好きとしては超遅咲きなのだけれど、その14年分の悩みへの答えを貪るように本を読んだ時期を記憶しています。小説、大好きです。もちろん影響されます。「真の芸術家は家庭を顧みない」という一文の記憶と、「家族の為の針仕事」という刺し子の理解を同列に並べることがどうも違和感で、刺し子は芸術じゃないんじゃないのとずっと言葉にしてきました。

日常の刺し子と非日常の小説（文学）は、あまり相性がよくありません。（真の）芸術を日常とするのであれば、それはやっぱり家庭を顧みないことになるだろうから、それも矛盾する。でも、よくよく考えると、その矛盾こそがアートの一翼だったりもする。なんなら小説の中に描かれる日常の方が、今の日常より本質を語っているのかもしれない。というわけで、少し原点に返って三島由紀夫の本を再読しようと思います。「何をたかが刺し子に大袈裟な」と思われるかもしれませんが、やっぱり僕は、昔の日本の日常（例えば生と死のコントラスト）が色濃く存在する手仕事が好きなんだろうなと思うのですよ。
