When I mention the Cultural Appropriation matter in Sashiko, I always get this question – “What is the definition of Sashiko, then?”. In a Western culture of dualism, deciding which one is justice (right) based on the logic, it is very important to have the definition. However, doubt what you believe, if you would like to learn the new culture. ☆
Definition (word) is not enough. Japanese artisans do not explain. The disciples learn (steal) by just looking at the masters for decades. It is IMPOSSIBLE to describe the whole concept of one mastery by words. Therefore, I ask people to take my workshops and join the Patreon. “Quick answer” will, unfortunately, repaint the culture itself.

In this society, “not speaking up” may end up abandoning the culture. So I spend so much time thinking, writing and explaining the Sashiko we practice. All of my writing is a crystal of sweating my guts out. I am on the journey of describing the culture that many “masters” told disciples impossible to verbalize – and that is probably the biggest difference from me and other Sashiko teachers. ☆
I still think it is impossible to understand what Sashiko is without one practicing the Sashiko as we do – yet, I gotta try to pass down the culture. So, do not take it so easy. It is my goal to share, but it doesn’t mean that I am okay with everything. ☆
Oh, by the way, if one is caring enough, they should know my tentative definition of Sashiko and Boro – yet people only read what they read – so I described what is NOT Sashiko / Boro. ☆
Okay. That’s it. I will go back to the regular routine.

Muchas gracias; por la explicación y compartir
It is an honor to get a small glimpse into another’s cultural heritage. Fiber arts and stitching have such long histories in many cultures. I choose to learn about others’ because I have a strong connection to my own. I encourage people who are interested to first learn their own histories. See it all as a part of different and deep roots rather than making something “other” and “exotic”, a fad to move from once not “hot” anymore.
