I feel disrespected when one uses the word “Sashiko” for the marketing reason – to sell their products without even trying to understand the culture of Sashiko. The fear of “trend” is within there – the money grabber will repaint the culture with “whatever which makes money”.
☆
Don’t get me wrong. We do sell Sashiko items, supplies, and wisdom (in the form of workshops). The “money” from the economical activity is necessary to pass down the Sashiko we practice. If I could wish, I want all Sashiko stitchers to be “caring” about what they choose from. I am not the best business person because I do not “sell” well. My priority is to support current friends (students & customers) rather than buzzing on the trend. Sashiko may be a new trend for you. However, for some of us, it is the culture that we invested in all of our lifetimes.

The beauty, the history, the feeling, the tradition all are what attracted me. It is so meditative and soothing to me

I totally get what you mean. I failed at my zero waste business also because I was a bad seller.

I agree. I hate to see shills who sell entire books pretending to have knowledge when they just make 2 lines of thread and call it sashiko.
