In my understanding, there is no such thing as “Right” and “Wrong” Sashiko. No definite rule or no regulation in Sashiko – it was a simple form of hand-stitching developed in Japan. However, I do have a strong preference for what kind of Sashiko I like – and what kind I dislike. ☆
Interestingly, I like the Sashiko stitched by someone who understands the Japaneseness. I do not like the photos with using the Sashiko as the marketing terms. In Sashiko becoming the trend, this may be the time to re-define what Sashiko is for Japanese. I have asked my Japanese friends to post their Sashiko with the tag of Let’s see how it turns out.

最近、僕個人の好き嫌いの話になっているので、ここでも少々ぶっちゃけます。「刺し子には正解も間違いもないさ」と寛容な姿を見せておりますが、それは正解か間違いかという二元論での話。好きか嫌いかにおいては、もう吃驚する程に、好きな刺し子は限られます。恵子さんが作る刺し子の中でも嫌いなもの（というか苦手なもの）があるほどに。写真の襤褸は、正直、うむ〜と頭を抱えてしまうのです。素敵なのだけど好みじゃない。恵子さんには似合うのに、俺には似合わない。

では日本国外の刺し子への好き嫌いについて話をすると、まぁ大変になります。 のタグで出てくる画像で日本のアカウントから投稿されている写真を除くと、ほぼ全て好きじゃないです。中には、「流石にこれは刺し子と呼んじゃ駄目だろう」とすら思うものも。それも含めて、日本の刺し子を再定義したいんだと思うんです。長い文章をブログ（sashico.com）で書いております。昨日今日で2記事書きました。「何だお前は、偉そうに。」と思われる方もいるかもしれませんし、「刺し子ってなんだ？」と改めて疑問に思われた方もいらっしゃるかもしれません。「なぜ今、刺し子を再定義なのか？」という思いを文章にしています。一読頂けたら幸いです。

Amazing 👍🏼 I love that texture of fabric, stitch and patina.
I also do many designs of my work as textile sculpture artist with that technique. But not cause it’s just trend or hip.
I did it since I still was student at art school, cause I was sad that cutting wonderful fabrics had so many left overs so I switched my approach to try to cut as less as possible fabric and if leftovers are there I made clothes out of those. Maybe I have kind of a Japanese soul 😉
Few years later I heard there is something like sashiko, boro boro or mottainai and wabi sabi. Now when I look back I see lots of those Japanese philosophies in my own works.
