I saw a post on FB Sashiko Group. He says, “try to avoid the bright accent in Japanese style Sashiko”. I admire his braveness to share his insight. Personally, I use both colors (as you can see on the photo), I STRONGLY prefer the natural soft color like Indigo, Kakishibu, and Botanical Dyes. It is about a preference, no “right” or “wrong”. Therefore, I want them to think “Why” the Japanese originally used the natural color in the past. Without the willingness to learn “why” and insisting on “freedom”, then the culture may be (unintentionally) repainted. Well, therefore, I share a lot of stories and history on my Patreon Page.

参加しているFBでの英語刺し子ページにて、面白い投稿がありました。「日本っぽい刺し子をしたいなら、明るい蛍光色は避けた方がいい」。当たり前のように、「刺し子は自由だ」、「創造力の為に色は大事だ」という賛同しないコメントがある中で、僕は少し違った見方でいます。ほう……と。多分、この人は「実際に刺し子をしている」のかもしれないと。

個人的には色はなんでも有りだと思っています。なんなら普通の日本人よりも色に関しては受け皿は大きいと思います。パステル、未だに僕は使い続けてますからね（笑）。ただ、「使う色は自由だ！」という前に、「なぜ」を考えて欲しいんです。なぜ、昔の刺し子には明るい色は少ないのか。なぜ、日本人は藍、柿渋、泥染め、白……といった自然の色を好むのか。その疑問を無視して、「自由が良いさぁ」というのは、流石に浅いなぁと思ってしまうのです。写真は賛否両論のパステル色デニムジャケットと、柿渋糸の刺し子デニム。厳密に職人目線でいうと、デニムに刺し子するなんてなんじゃそら……となるのかもしれませんが、それでも、僕はデニムに刺し子をする理由もあるし、パステルを使い続けてしまう理由もあります。繰り返しになるんですが、「自由」や「芸術」という言葉に逃げてほしくないんですよね。
