“Boro” is a difficult concept to fully explain in non-Japanese language. In fact, I am troubling myself to describe it even in Japanese. One thing I can say is that, Boro is not “only” a form of patchwork. The statement of “Boro is a type of Japanese patchworking” explain only 10% of what Boro actually is. ☆
Getting cold in Pennsylvania. It is time to start wearing the Boro Jacket again to make it more “Authentic” Boro. ☆

海外で刺し子に人気が出てきた理由の一つが、「襤褸」がアート業界で有名になったことだと思います。襤褸……ぼろ……らんる……。なかなかに説明するのが難しいです。刺し子と違ってそこまでコダワリもないので、「まぁ良いんじゃないの」という感じもあったり。日本国内でも様々な解釈がある横文字のBOROを語るには、まだまだ僕は勉強が足りません。日々、襤褸と向き合ってはいるけれど。

個人的にですが、一般的に言われる「襤褸は無作為の美だ」っていうのには賛同していません。あんなん無意識にできるわけない。究極の貧困状態の中でも（内なる）美を楽しもうとする日本（女性）のプライドの結晶だと思っています。「襤褸は日本のパッチワーク」という簡略化された表現を目にすると、なんだかなぁと思ってしまいます。まぁ（今は）仕方ないかと思いつつ、なんだかなぁと。

襤褸の美しさの真髄は、布と糸とのギリッギリの均衡にあると思っています。もう、糸（布）としての役目を終えようとしている、ほぼ「ゴミ」な布に、針を通し刺し子糸で、もう一度命（祈り）を吹き込ませる。襤褸を見ると、どうしても「生と死」を意識してしまい、怖さを感じてしまうのです。普段の生活の中で「死」をあまり怖がらない質だからこそ、襤褸の微妙な均衡は怖いし畏れるものなのかもしれません。布すら終わりには抵抗するのか？あるいは、そこには無機質な布があるだけなのか。そんな不安定感。儚さ。希望。抵抗。叫び。だからこそ美しい気もしてるんですけどね。

my mother uses the phrase ぼろぼろ to describe a piece of fabric that is in tatters. is this the same boro? 🤔

Hi Sashi, just wanted to let you know Jody Alexander will be visiting our Fiber Artist group in San Antonio. I think, like you said, Boro is probably difficult to explain in English and Jspanese because it is so personal. The thoughts that go thru our heads when we hand sew are so personal and will exist.
