One news delivered me a mixed feeling – sad, empathy, and encouragement. One of the groups of artisans we had built a good relationship decided to go “part-time” from “full-time”. They will still take our orders, and nothing will dramatically change, but I cannot stop thinking about the reason behind it. They are very passionate and ambitious in what they do, yet they are going to part-time in doing what they are proud of. This isn’t someone’s story. It can happen to us anytime, any moment. It is how difficult it is to “be above the bread line” in hand-crafting. Again, even for us, without your support, we would need to go “part-time” as we were just a few years ago.

Financially speaking, what I choose doesn’t make sense. High-risk and low return (in terms of money). Yet, we learn that there are people waiting for our Sashiko, stories, and sharing. We are serious about what we do, and therefore, we can inspire others.

ある職人さん達が、本業を他に始められて、元々の本業は副業にされるという話を伺いました。副業でも週末を使って、そのお仕事は続けられるとのこと。貴重で大切な文化継承のお仕事なので、頑張って欲しいし、僕たちも変わらず応援できたらと思っています。

偉そうに上から目線ですが、これは刺し子業にしても一緒。もし恵子さんと僕に「養う家族」がいたら、やっぱり刺し子は週末だけの活動になると思います。もしかしたら、刺し子を教える活動はしても、刺し子そのものの作品作りは休止になるかもしれません。ギリギリのラインでの活動です。だからこそ、海外で「刺し子はね〜」と、知ったかぶりで語られると怒りを覚えるんでしょうね。軽く扱われて良いんです。趣味で良いんです。でも、「刺し子は日本的だ」というのだけは無視して欲しくない。ここ数ヶ月ずーっと同じことを言ってますが、それでもまだまだ伝わりきれてませんね。日本中の貴重な手仕事をされている皆様へ、良い事が沢山ありますように。
