In the Sashiko Live Streaming today, I learned another awesome analogy to explain what Sashiko is for us (Japanese). Comparing “climbing mountains” and “Sashiko” are a very good way to unconfuse me when I receive some strange messages. I blindly thought everyone was interested in climbing the mountain – but, in reality, some are just curious about the view (or the fact that they had reached) of the summit without actually walking on the road. Very interesting. I will update many stories based on this topic – on Patreon, where you can make us the “Artists”.

配信で話し、配信で出会う皆様から学ぶ。「刺し子に正しいも間違いもない」「刺し子は日常に存在するから排他的ではない」と常日頃言葉にしておきながら、でも、ここ1年程、たまに届く英語でのコメントやメールに苛立ちを感じていました。その都度紹介してきたのですが、今日の配信で「あ〜。そういうことか。」と学ぶことができました。ありがとうございます。

「刺し子は味噌汁（に似ている）」に続き秀逸な例えです。「刺し子は登山（に似ている）」。「山を登るだけの登山のどこが楽しいの？」と疑問に思う人がいるように、「針を動かすだけの刺し子のどこが楽しいの？」という人がいます。これは、実際にやった人だけがわかる楽しみかもしれません。でもね、それは「好きな人が好きで良いじゃない」と。ただ、僕が混乱して苛立ちを覚えてたのは、「登山（刺し子）をしている人は、山を登る（刺し子をする）のが好きだ」という前提があったからです。まさか、刺し子をしているのに刺し子自体は対して好きじゃない人がいるっていうのは、想像には至っても実感できなかったんです。でもこれ、登山だったらわかりやすい。「大変な思いをして山は登りたくないけれど、山頂（登頂）には興味ある」という人は一定数いると思うから。すっきりしました。でも、同時に、今の僕の活動が大変だなぁと思うのは、もしかしたら英語圏の多くが「登頂証明書」が欲しいだけの人なのかもしれないな……と思ってしまうからです（笑）今日の配信、是非ご覧下さい！

In knitting, I think of this as process versus product. I’m definitely more of a process person, but who doesn’t love a beautiful finished work when it’s all finally done.
ただの呟きでしたが🤣🤣やっぱり、続けていくことと、伝えていくこととですよね。大変なんだけど、これをやめたら、もっと大変な事になってしまうかも…。その辺も刺し子と登山は似ているのかな？と。
Stitch after stitch is very meditative. It’s the beauty of handstitching, no rush, no electricity required, just needle thimble and thread. You can take it with you and do it everywhere. It’s like walking or climbing, pace after pace is very reflective.
Reminds me of my first – and last – experience with a hiking meetup group I once joined. The hike was up a beautiful mountain in early spring, when leaves were just started to appear, streams were sparkling with melting snow, and the views were unobstructed. I brought my camera, but soon found that my fellow hikers were so fixated on getting to the top of the mountain as fast as possible they became annoyed if I stopped for a moment to take a photo or enjoy nature’s beauty. I still don’t understand 😢🌄🌿
