We have a goal. One day, we would like to sustain our life with practicing only Sashiko, without sacrificing someone’s effort. It is very challenging to provide a family with hand-crafting as an occupation. In order to be “wealthy”, the higher degree in college and/or engineering skills would be the better. However, it is okay to have a variety of people who decided to live on something “unproductive” right? Sashiko and Boro was a wisdom to survive in poverty. We do not have to do Sashiko and Boro to maintain our life. However, we “choose” to do it. Why? We are here to share our reasons here. Do you have your own reason to enjoy?

I love your job 💖😍

Generally, a lot of ideas to discuss appear in your post. People who are wealthy often don’t have time to enjoy life, to socialize, to have relationships. People living with less money (above bread line, of course) can feel more satisfaction. I’m changing a job now and I’m thinking a lot of if I reduce my income to have more energy how far/down can I go. And how to use skills as mending, sewing, cooking less expensive meals etc. and maybe doing some sewing/ mending jobs for others. In fact, my goal is to change the life when I was “switched on or off” (nothing between) to “be online – mindful”. And less productive in average.
Success to me is not measured in the amount of money you have but in the other ways your life is rich and fulfilled. Family, friends, creating something meaningful to you whether it be sashiko or boro or weaving or drawing or painting or calligraphy. etc … that’s success. 😍
Please take care of yourself. The balance will be balanced when it’s meant to be. Please take your time as long as you need.
Wow!
I quit my job in April to stay home with my new baby. I’d like to do more Sashiko and embroidery and I try to squeeze some in while she’s napping. I don’t get paid to take care of my baby and I rarely sell my embroidery so I am not making a living doing it, but I am satisfied every day. We are healthy and happy and you can’t buy that!
I did sashiko for the first time at my bachan’s home when I visited Japan last fall. It was therapeutic. It was one step towards realizing that I love working with my hands. Plus the idea of maintaining the life of a garment always made sense to me.
