Ah. So many comments and questions. I read them all. Thank you very much. I appreciate so many kind words to encourage me (and a few cherry picking messages). I will do a quick English Live Streaming on Instagram, starting at 10:30 am EST, 7/2, following by the one in Japanese. So if you want to say hello to me, I will be there.
☆
One concern I didn’t want to unattended. Thank you very much for worrying about “Sashiko” on behalf of me. Some researched the trademark of Sashiko, gave me advise, and following question what is “Authentic Sashiko?”. I will answer these questions one by one, but here is my quick answer to the question “Are you okay with the free-interpreted Sashiko?”
☆
Yes. I am okay. I encourage people to call theirs Sashiko when they respect the J/C. Then you may think, “what if their Sashiko-inspired item – which doesn’t look like Sashiko, repaint the traditional Sashiko?” Don’t worry. Why? Because we are proud of the power of what we make. The Japanese tend to protect their own culture and craft by showing, not by explaining. The truth exists in the craft, not in words. This is one of the big reasons we do not speak up culture is at risk. It is the same in Sushi, Kimono, Sashiko, and anything. They may call what they cook as Sushi, but when you try the authentic Sushi in Japan, they will lose words (as I always do). The same in Sashiko. Therefore, I am okay to people call their stitching Sashiko. It is their own interpretation. I respect that – unless they do not minimize the J/C behind Sashiko. I believe they call their stitching Sashiko because they like the traditional look. I trust the world and our craftsmanship for that matter
☆
I spoke up for because Kim has the influence to repaint the culture. So, thank you for your worry. Sashiko should be okay. I hope you will like the traditional look of Sashiko & keep enjoying your Sashiko.
☆

A photo of “Boro-inspired” piece with many knots. Although I shared our “preference” of not using knots on our Sashiko project (on our website), there is no problem in using knots. In fact, some pieces would require the knots to be there. ☆ When we make “Boro & Boro to…

In March, I am allocating my time in stitching as much as I can. If you are in textile (or in any craft for that matter), unfortunately, “making” itself often does not make ends meet. It is extremely difficult to make a living out of just “hand-making”. I wish I…

So impressed by the Sashiko Patchwork from Keiko (Yes. the co-owner of this account and my mother). There isn’t “correct” and “wrong” Sashiko in my definition, but there is definately beautiful Sashiko fabric. This is the one :D. — This is a swatch of patchwork to be a Sashiko Jacket….

Thanks so much for your encouragement and for sharing your knowledge! I believe so strongly in the importance of upcycling and repairing clothing while embracing the peaceful practice of Sashiko-inspired stitching that I’m beginning to teach it at our local Makerspace. I cannot bring myself to call it Sashiko though, only Sashiko inspired or Sashiko style, because I feel I don’t have that right, not having a drop of Japanese blood in me and recognizing the ancient history of the practice of which my ancestors had no part. Probably silly, but that’s just me I guess! Thanks again ~ I am learning so much from you that I can pass on to my students and hopefully inspire to keep clothing out of landfills while appreciating those who went before us 💙

This is a great distinction, and I hope will help folks understand how nuanced these issues are. I think often people want easy answers. Thank you!
